Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

30 Aug 2023There are some lovely sections on this route. For example, much of Stoneymeadow Road has a path parallel to it, a bit muddy but away from the traffic. (You'll find it just after the 'Cyclists rejoin carriageway' sign). And after crossing the East Kilbride Expressway on leaving Blantyre, there is an unexpected section through a green park.

17 Mar 2023Review of Easham one (East Kilbride to Hamilton one)
I walked this route on a day of continuous rain in March 2023. The route itself is easy enough to follow. However in practice there are some slightly tricky sections. The first section from East Kilbride train station to the “Whirlies” Roundabout is very straightforward, following as it does the bed of a disused railway line. The roundabout is very busy and requires a bit of care, especially as there are no pedestrian crossings to help. However visibility is good and there are traffic lights which interrupt the flow of traffic for a short time. The route then drops downhill and under an overpass to join Stoneymeadow road. The next section is along this back road. There is a pavement at first, but this disappears after a while and the only option is to walk along the grass verge or the roadway where the verge is narrow or too high. I managed this without too much difficulty but it is definitely an issue that requires flagging up. The pavement reappears at the Crossbasket Estate and the going is much easier from then on. However care is required again at the major road intersection between the East Kilbride Expressway and High Blantyre Road / Main Street. The junction is crossed via two tunnels which are clearly indicated on the route map. Immediately after this, the route requires the busy Main Street to be crossed. There IS a pedestrian crossing but it is quite far along the road. It is now a simple matter of following the pavement all the way to Hamilton West Station and the end of the route.
Overall I found this an interesting route which gives access to a number of places I had only previously whizzed past at high speed. It genuinely does offer an alternative to the motorised transport that would normally be used. However Stoneymeadow Road is far from ideal as a walking route (although not too bad for cyclists). I note from the OS map of the area that there is a Stoneymeadow Woods Path which looks like it bridges the gap between the two pavemented sections. If I was doing this route again, I would probably try this path.
