Help connect Hamilton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Hamilton’s Slow Ways.

For example, much of Stoneymeadow Road has a path parallel to it, a bit muddy but away from the traffic. (You'll find it just after the 'Cyclists rejoin carriageway' sign). And after crossing the East Kilbride Expressway on leaving Blantyre, there is an unexpected section through a green park....

I started at Motherwell train station, walked over the bridge across the railway (few stairs to climb to walk over the bridge), then its downhill along Ladywell Road in Motherwell, through a small housing estate, come to a wooded area, followed a path which leads you to Strathclyde park, lovely views, sun shining on the lake, easy pathway to walk round, go on through an underpass, then up through the Furlough estate (slightly steep hill) crossed over road round past County Buildings in Hamilton, passed a well known ice cream parlour Equis, pit stop for ice cream then onto Hamilton West train station. Lovely leisurely walk, would definitely recommend it as it's not too far a distance and the views were worth it. The route was safe, no access issues apart from stairs up to the bridge....

Walked Motherwell train station (you walk over the bridge to start which is behind the station) to Hamilton West....

Bit of a slow start as couldn't get the app to reverse the route (until we nearly completed the walk!) Was a pleasant, fairly easy walk. Starts of through streets then a nice walk around part of Strathclyde park before finishing up at Hamilton West train station (getting a well deserved ice cream from equies)...

It’s a straight walk up the hill from there into Hamilton and finishing at Hamilton West railway station....

The route then drops downhill and under an overpass to join Stoneymeadow road. However care is required again at the major road intersection between the East Kilbride Expressway and High Blantyre Road / Main Street. Immediately after this, the route requires the busy Main Street to be crossed. However Stoneymeadow Road is far from ideal as a walking route (although not too bad for cyclists)....

After crossing the busy Bothwell Road, the route heads downhill via “The Furlongs” (look to your left to get a glimpse of Hamilton Racecourse) and passes Hamilton Mausoleum before heading under the M74 motorway via an underpass. On emerging back into daylight, the route turns right and follows a very pleasant and well-surfaced cycle track through woodland, eventually arriving at the Clyde where it turns right to follow the river bank....

Review of SlowWays Route Hammot one (Hamilton to Motherwell). It eventually leads to Ladywell Road via the edge of the loch, some short wooded sections and the residential Brogan Crescent. Eventually a short length of footpath leads to a footbridge over the railway and the end of the route at Motherwell Railway Station....

The next part of the route is along tarmacked or compacted earth footpaths (sometimes quite narrow) with good views down to the river and up to Bothwell Castle. Beyond this there is a long, relatively uninteresting pavement section until the route enters Bothwell Road Park (with its impressive War Memorial)....

When you are at the Old Avon Bridge you can continue the Hamlar one route and enter the wooded trail into the Chatelherault Park or to avoid many irregular woodland steps, turn slightly to the east and use the vehicle road to Chatelherault House. Rejoin the Hamlar One route by using the Duke’s Bridge to cross Avon water to the west side. When you have past the trail turn to White Bridge, currently (Sept 2022) closed due to landslip, you have to decide if you need to avoid over 50 uneven woodland steps and very narrow path of the Millheugh Steps (the clue is in the name! ) section....

Continue south along the road past the Covenanters Monument and over the Clyde at Bothwell Bridge. Continue on the B7071 past the Hamilton Race Course until you reach Bothwell Road Park. Once past the supermarkets and coffee shops, you will turn westwards and the end of the route at Hamilton West Railway Station which has good access for all forms of transport....

The Uddham routes starts at the Green opposite the Tunnock’s Bakery in Uddingston. If you want to avoid a flight of 10 steps down, continue south along the Uddingston Road until you reach Langside Road which takes you downhill to the Wraith Interchange - the same place Green Street would have taken you. Museum on Mote Hill/Muir Street for a unique Tunnock’s surprise...

This route follows a busy main single-carriageway road that has no pavement for almost its entire length. It also has many bends where drivers may not have much time to react to walkers on the road. There are no direct alternatives; it would be better to walk via Crossford and Quarter or Larkhall....

The crossing is shown as an aspirational core path on the South Lanarkshire Core Paths Plan of 2012 on Map 10 Calderwood Hillhouse, but it’s not clear whether it was ever built....
