Description
Similar to DULTIV(one) this route takes the eastern side of the River Exe. However it avoids the long section along the old Tiverton to Bampton road, along which the traffic travels too fast for comfort, with few escape routes. Unfortunately this route by necessity misses out the lovely walk through Knightshayes. however the lane taken between Chevithorne and Bampton Down is much quieter and safer than the old road and in my opinion makes for a more comfortable and pleasant walk and includes some really good views down the Exe valley and the surrounding countryside

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

03 Apr 2024A nice and fairly quiet walk between these towns. A good option to DULTIV(two) which utilizes the Tiverton Old Road for much of its length between Bampton and Tiverton. Unfortunately although not heavy on traffic many locals use that road as a fast alternative to the main road in the valley and so drice accordingly. This route uses the much quieter road between the weather beacon at Bampton Down to Chevithorne. This makes for a much more pleasant and comfortable walk. However because of the amount of unpaved road walking I have only given the route a 4 star grade. Good views and nice countryside throughout, Between Bampton and Dulverton the route is the same as the other alternatives. There are stiles along the way and a couple of fairly steep off road climbs/descents. There is a good variety of pubs, cafes and shops in the pleasant town of Bampton at around the half way mark, I would be happy to walk this way again and would recommend it as a good day out. There is a bus service between Tiverton and Dulverton for a return trip, which also calls at Bampton to make for a shorter alternative.
