Description

This is essentially the same route as DINWOR 1, but more accurately drawn, with a few minor tweaks at the Dinnington end. In particular it follows the bridleway line across the railway west of Shireoaks properly, and also the double bridge in Worksop where we cross the Chesterfield canal. I resisted the temptation to use the well cut permissive path straight across the field between the wood and the edge of Dinnington, but it is clearly popular with locals

Hugh Hudson

11 Jul 2023 (edited 12 Jul 2023) Summer

Walked from Worksop to Dinnington. I was following DINWOR 1, and this new route tidies a few issues I had with the GPX plotting - it is fractionally longer but only because it is more accurate. I have also tidied the route through and out of Dinnington to remove a section of road walking and use more of the main shopping street rather than the Aldi car park.

Leaving Worksop station, we follow residential streets to Sandhill Lake, and follow the track round the east side of the lake to the staggered bridges over a drainage ditch and the canal. We then follow the canal for some distance. Beyond Shireoaks station we follow the bridleway right that crosses the railway then hugs the edge of the field to reach Brancliffe Grange. We head up the hill, through a wood and across the river then take the path left through the golf course. There are some yellow posts to help. On the far side, a small path heads right where the main path goes left and becomes a track. The right hand path goes through trees. In places there is little sign of a path, but there are just enough yellow markers to give the walker confidence to follow the hedge around the edge of the golf course to the track that leads us out to the A57.

Cross with care and follow the verge left then look out for the footpath right - there is a sign but it could easily be missed. Once out of the trees we are on clear farm tracks, but these do deviate a little from the right of way lines. This section over high ground has fine views to the east. We reach a road, where a concessionary path in the field opposite removes the need for a short road walk. We cross the field to reach a wood, where there is a choice of routes around to the far left corner (I was following DINWOR 1 which uses the road, but there are better routes on the concessionary paths).

We follow the edge of the field parallel to Swinston Hill Road and around the houses to Lakeland Drive. There is a path immediately opposite so there is no need for the detour to Sunningdale Road that was used in DINWOR 1. I have also changed the final part of the route to use Laughton Road (the main shopping street) rather than going around the Aldi car park to reach the rather disappointing meeting point at the far corner of the bus station (there is a nicer place to rest, with three benches and a view of the church) at the junction of Laughton Road and the B6060).

Overall I found this a rather enjoyable route, that makes the most of the green space in a fairly industrial area, so full marks from me.
