Description

Daisy C's descriptive powers are better than mine so this is copied from Dagrom2:
This route avoids Dagenham Central Park which is undergoing major works from 2021 to 2024, maybe longer and means that DagRom 1 could be un-usable. It is half a mile longer but more than half is through green spaces, compared to under a fifth of DagRom 1. It goes through The Chase nature reserve plus Eastbrookend Country Park (ECPk) and a couple of smaller green spaces. The landscape includes woodland, meadows, riverside paths and small lakes as well as recreational parks and (mostly) quieter residential roads.

The first road section from Dagenham Heathway to the top of Pondfield Park and is the same as DagRom 1. Between Victoria Rd and Pondfield Rd it cuts through the Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club carpark which seems to be open 24hrs/day, although match days could be busy. There are other, probably more scenic ways through ECPk, the SE quadrant looks promising but has some very twisting and branching paths. This route however should be straightforward to follow and goes past the ECPk visitor centre where there's a cafe and toilets, the most central rest-point on the route.

There is also a cafe and public toilets at the Queens Hospital on Rom Valley Way, and possibly at the football club. The 103, 252, 174 bus routes all intersect with the middle third of this route

20 Jan 2024 Winter

I walked from Dagenham to Romford.
This is essentially the same as Daisy C's Dagrom2 corrected for accuracy.
Quickly onto suburban roads with cars on the pavement, then across a park to Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club carpark, empty on this day. Down the street to the end, then a fenced in, tree lined, path between sports grounds. Over May&Baker way into Eastbrookend Country Park, good grit paths. Back out of the Park and along a quiet road past a visitors centre (café) and along a track to Hook Hall Farm. Feels very rural here. Just past the farm the route turns alongside the River Rom. The path is narrow, twisty, a little muddy, with roots across the path, but very beautiful. Clearly work has been done tidying and re-naturalising this part of the river. Across a bridge and fields, the path is raised so you don't have to walk in the wetter (and icy today) areas. Then Rush Green Road, a busy road to cross with crossing points, the lights seem to take ages. A suburban road takes you to Queen's Hospital grounds where the bridle path is sign posted. There is another busy road roundabout but an underpass saves having to cross roads. Then a short hop to South Street and Romford Train Station and the shops just beyond.
For an urban walk this is mostly green and pleasant and you can forget you're in a metropolitan area. Very nice.
Rough ground and narrow bike barriers make it unsuitable for wheels.

Thanks for fixing this, perils of posting a route without testing it first. I'd be happy for DagRom 2 to be deleted as it's superfluous now. Would you mind your review going too?

I did test a part of it since then as it overlaps with another route. One short bit of the Rom-side path was cambered, perhaps at risk of crumbling. And there were lush nettles around that I think could have concealed that when grown any longer. I think warning people so they tread carefully through any nettle patches would suffice though.

Thanks. If the other route is deleted then I'm happy for my review to go with it.
