Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Dagenham’s Slow Ways.

There are public toilets in Dagenham Library just before the Underground Station....

The icing on the cake was the walking through the marshes east of Rainham and along the River Thames seawall....

This route starts well from Dagenham as it's quickly off the busy roads then into a neighborhood park and then Beam Parklands which is more wild. From Rainham village centre eastwards it is very straightforward walk along pavements beside relatively busy roads with few turns. The final run, from the roundabout into the village centre, is residential and still busy but not too long at least....

Unfortunately there's another bit of this route which isn't possible to walk, the crossing of the River Beam in Beam Parklands - see screenshot and Strava heatmap. I've found a few other fairly minor changes to improve the route using a small park and avoiding the large road interchange north of Rainham Village centre....

The rest of the route though Dagenham & Redbridge FC car park and the streets of Dagenham were fine....

Pleasant lake in South Park and toilets by the north entrance....

There are decent public toilets in Dagenham Library at junction of Heathway and Church Elm Lane....

I walked this on a drizzly day from Dagenham to North Woolwich. A lot of road walking... I'm still giving it a 4 although reluctantly....

From the start at a parade of shops, you soon go around the station along West Road (photo #1), and then Arisdale Avenue. After crossing Bonnygate Woods Park (photo #3), and the local shopping area, there is a lovely stretch through Dilkes Park (photo #4), followed by a little along a residential street. First Romford Road and then Sandy Lane (photo #5)....

It's a little busy alongside Upney Lane (photo #6), but the rest of the route is along quiet residential streets (photo #8, #9, #10) — finishing at Barking (photo #11)....

From Ilford station, the route starts alongside their high street (photo #1), and then a section along a busy road (photo #2)....

After a short section along a road (photo #6), you continue onto another part (photo #7), and a tree lined alley (photo #8)....

Strider
Suburban walking through Ockendon with a mix of quite roads, shops, a couple of parks and open playing fields. Sandy Lane and Wennington Roads are pavement walking next to busy roads. As soon as practical the route dodges down into quiet pleasant suburban roads with shops, pubs and cafes....

Walk this routeBack out of the Park and along a quiet road past a visitors centre (café) and along a track to Hook Hall Farm. Then Rush Green Road, a busy road to cross with crossing points, the lights seem to take ages. A suburban road takes you to Queen's Hospital grounds where the bridle path is sign posted....
Strider
This route is good and well mapped except for two parts. One where it turns through a hedge and fences over private land. Two where walking alongside a busy road can be avoided....

After the roundabout there is pavement walking right beside a very busy road, not nice. Apart from a section of road walking, this was a very pleasant walk, very open, with good views....

I was actually looking for a new RomSou route, or just a small adjustment to RomSou 1 needed because of the problem going through Little Belhus Country Park in Ockendon....

This route was designed to remove some of the busy A road walking that blights NorDag 1. It does that and adds some more Thames Path and pleasant greenspaces, but the roads are still fairly noticeable....

Walk this routeDon't walk this route unless you just love walking beside huge roads with fast traffic and lots of air pollution. Walked in winter 22/23 from North Woolwich to near Greatfield Park then abandoned it, I'd already had enough big roads, just couldn't face the long stretch on the pavement of the multi lane A13....

Walk this routeThis is effectively the only green part of this route, the remainder being all side streets and busy main roads and currently there is no sensible alternative....

Highly accurate and a nice walk on the elevated part of the track through Beam Parklands to begin. A lot of roads but they were quiet and all had footpaths. On the approach to Sandy Lane you can stay on the footpath instead of cutting through the field as the map suggests....
bobmatt3
Cuts through the backstreets and parks with good accessibility...

Once you’re out of Romford town centre the route tries to keep you off the main roads for the majority of the way up to the park, walking through well kept residential streets. This has lots of flat open grass, an outdoor gym and two play areas (one either side of the park). It's a good place to let the dog off the lead for a run or let the children play in the play areas)....
