Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

23 May 2024This was the first half of a day's walk from Crofton to Castleford. The first part on roads, and then paths by the holiday park, is very pleasant, although the busy Doncaster Road requires care and patience to cross. After West Hardwick the path has become very overgrown, so stout shoes and long trousers are advised! In places the path is only just discernible, but perseverance gets you out of the woods. The stones were slippery and the field path muddy after recent rain. Both ends have a choice of shops and cafes.

15 Sep 2022Great enjoyable route, easy to follow on mainly surfaced paths with straight forward gates and one dog friendly stile (see photo). Mostly off road (apart from the urban sections to/from the high streets at either end of course) with just one very short section on narrow pavement alongside a main road. This route does also use the lane past the Yorkshire air ambulance helicopter base but this is only an access road for the caravan park so is very quiet. Nostell Priory parkland is lovely to walk through, sometimes has free roaming cows but they're used to people and I've never had any issues with them. The paths through the fields at the Featherstone end of the route are unsurfaced but easy to navigate using this extra information regarding a slight inaccuracy on the slow ways route:
One small section of the marked slowways route is inaccurate. If walking North (Crofton to Featherstone) you need to turn left as you leave the woodland near West Hardwick and follow the edge of the field before turning right at the telegraph pole (see photo), don't walk straight through the field as the route on slowways suggests. If you zoom in on the route online you can see the red dotted footpath line you should be following (see screenshot). After a few metres you then need to turn left, before you pass under the telephone lines, uphill across the field towards the large conifer trees (I've attached a photo), now you're back on the marked slow ways route. Exit through the gate and turn left to continue through the housing estate to Featherstone high street.
If walking south (Featherstone to Crofton), you need to turn right when you reach the shallow ditch at the bottom of the hill in the field after leaving the Featherstone housing estate. Do not continue straight on across the field under the telephone line as the slowways route suggests (see screenshot), if you zoom in on the slowways route you can see the red dotted footpath line you should be following. At the telegraph pole turn left (see photo), following the edge of the field before turning right into the woodland via a short section of boardwalk and rejoining the marked slow ways route.
Take care on a short section of uneven stones in the Woodland near West Hardwick as these can be slippery, there are also a couple of short sections of boardwalk here (see photos).
This is definitely a route I would recommend.
