Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 May 2024A decent route. I walked from Kempston to Cranfield, and then used the bus to get back to the start point, of which there are plenty of stops in Cranfield to get back.
The route itself is a reasonably pleasant affair. Once you clear the suburbs of Bedford, you enter countryside quickly and although some sections are lengthy straight paths the route is reasonably varied. This route would not be suitable for wheels due to narrow sections, kissing gates and steep inclines.
Terrain is reasonable - some sections require caution - including a farmers ploughed field and a steep stony path together near Bourne End House. In winter, be prepared that some field margins might be muddy and rivetted from tractors - I would wear hiking boots not trainers outside of summer. The fields in the middle of the route can become waterlogged in the margins.
Safety wise - there are a few things to note - including a crossing of the A6 where you need to wait for a break in traffic, but it sits on the right side of acceptable in my eyes given the gravel track down to the road and the roundabouts at each end slowing traffic enough for breaks to occur. Be patient!
I have altered the GPX to improve navigation on four sections - i) the crossing of the A6 (where there is a dedicated gravel path but you still need to wait for a break in traffic) ii) the new path at Bedford Link logistics park - where the old right of way is now impassable iii) field crossing to the west of Wooton - to ensure it is easy to navigate to the gaps in hedges and across the field which has many intersecting and unclear dog walkers routes iv) a hedge gap across a gulley to the west of Roxhill Manor farm - where you need to take the path to the East of the hedge which seems counterintuative to those walking East to West.
