Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Kempston’s Slow Ways.

Walk this routeWalking 1.5 km through Cranfield on Bedford Road has nothing greatly to recommend it. You can reduce that tedium by half by going a short distance up Court Road from the start, before turning left onto Rectory Lane and left again onto the footpath which runs parallel to Bedford Road and rejoins it at Holywell Road. Yes, the Bedford Western Bypass is a busy road, but gaps do appear....

The main reason I can't go higher than three stars is the road walking on Woburn Road parallel to the A421 - for an unclassified road this is surprisingly fast and busy, popular with lorries, and although it is a wide road with verges, the verges are too overgrown to be easily walkable. Apart from one short pavement section, this path takes us past Kempston Academy, beyond which we turn right to reach Wilkinson Road. Beyond the stream/drainage ditch, a permissive path left takes us into the trees, and we soon join a much wider path. Beyond the pub, we take a well marked field path right that heads towards, then right of Ampthill Park House. From here we head for the Lodge House, passing left of it onto a well used path that takes us to Park Hill, from where the Ampthill meeting point is a short walk on quiet roads and pavements....

Walk this route(ii) In Ampthill Park, there is a wide choice of paths on the ground, but there is no access from the park to the Lodge drive, so an alternative route from there to Ampthill is unavoidable....

There are a few steps, and Bromham Bridge, though fairly quiet, lacks pavements. From the green in Bromham, we go south along Village Road for a short distance then go left at the church into a field, where a good path takes across Bromham Park to Millfield....

I have altered the GPX to improve navigation on four sections - i) the crossing of the A6 (where there is a dedicated gravel path but you still need to wait for a break in traffic) ii) the new path at Bedford Link logistics park - where the old right of way is now impassable iii) field crossing to the west of Wooton - to ensure it is easy to navigate to the gaps in hedges and across the field which has many intersecting and unclear dog walkers routes iv) a hedge gap across a gulley to the west of Roxhill Manor farm - where you need to take the path to the East of the hedge which seems counterintuative to those walking East to West....

Walk this routeSlow Way is good, but improving accuracy of gpx, as I found myself checking gpx and retracing steps across a field, walking the right side of a hedge, through housing estates etc. Also gpx suggests plunging down the embankment onto an A road where a gravel path exists. Please see new route option Crakem 2 for improved gpx....

Note - along the Great Ouse, the footpath near Queens Bridge can be walked right along the river, there is no need to dog leg here as the route suggests. This could be revised if needed, but the current meeting place does help in the fact it isn't miles away from connecting a little triangle of routes between Kempston, Bromham and Bedford....

I walked it in reverse from Kempston to Bromham, except for the part past Bromham Bridge - which was open but this last 1km has been well reviewed previously and on the Bromham to Bedford route. North of Great Denham Park, there is a dog-leg which seems strange and could be quicker via the S to N footpath link, and also at the very start of the route (if going from Kempston), there is a path which cuts a small amount of time just after near Papa Johns - see attached....

However I started the walk at Bromham bridge. The bridge has no footpath but does have passing places for pedestrians. The walk is really nice and I would definitely walk it again....

At one point in Bedford the path passes below a bridge which had a height restriction of 1.4 meters....

Quickest way between Kempston and Cranfield without having to step on the Cranfield road which is not nice. Footpaths near top farm will get very muddy in winter. Lovely countryside once you get the other side of Wootton....

Unfortunately the Kempston Mill footbridge on this route is closed, so this route cannot be completed. The walk from Bromham to Great Denham along the river is pleasant, despite the sound of traffic....
