Description

This is a beautiful walk. Other than a small amount of suburban road walking at the start, the route was ferociously green when I walked it. Much of the route follows the River Teign, which is lined by woodland and open fields. There are steps and stiles. A downfall is a stretch of 200m of (fast and busy) road walking, connecting to the west of the B3193. On the day I walked the route just enough of the verge had been cut to allow me to walk off the road, but on another day that may not have been possible. I was OK with this stretch, but I wouldn't have been if I had small children with me or were unsteady on my feet. I'd like to see a new footpath created to deal with this issue.

This route replaces Chukin One which I've just walked. The only change I made was to deal with a segment of the route that does not follow the right of way. Someone may want to suggest an additional version that avoids the road I mentioned above.

I'd happily walk this route again. The river, fields and woodlands were great

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A really nice route which was pretty quiet on the day I walked it in late January. The walk along the river Teign was very pleasant. Much of the route is along country paths and forest. There was some traffic along Clay Lane. But I always felt safe and comfortable. The roads in and out of the towns of Chudleigh and Kingsteignton are both paved.

Walked from Kingsteignton to Chudleigh, heading out on Broadway Road is ok, no pavement but the road is quite wide and there were only a few instances where cars raced past us. An alternative pavemented route is walking down Chudleigh Road and turning left onto Exeter Road to join the route, a longer detour though. We then followed the public footpath through beautiful woodland that hugs the River Teign, the path has uneven parts with roots and stones sticking out of the ground, fine for us but maybe not for others. Dry and muddy parts even in summer but was fine in walking shoes and easy to avoid the muddy spots. The path near Clay Lane was a bit overgrown but fine in long trousers. Really enjoyed this stretch of the route and saw all kinds of wildlife. We knew Clay Lane was going to be the most daunting part so we went Sunday morning when it was generally quieter, like others have said it’s not the nicest road as it can be very busy. The verge wasn’t cut when we went and was very overgrown. We know there are traffic control lights on New Bridge so we would time it where we could walk on the road and would walk on the overgrown verge when cars were coming. A bit of a shame you can’t walk over New Bridge to get to Chudleigh Knighton too. We found it easier to walk on the left side verge (side with the farmers field) as it was wider, however there are gaps in the verge for drainage but these could easily be seen. It would be nice if the verge could become more pedestrian friendly as it also narrows when approaching the junction at the end of the road, although doable, it’s not pleasant. The junction at the end of Clay Lane was quiet when we did this walk but we have seen it can be quite busy, I do wonder how safe it would be to cross at a busier time. Heading up the road to Gappah and through the Chudleigh countryside is very picturesque. There were cows in the field when we walked through but they didn’t bother us. The last part of the route is along a pavement next to the main road into Chudleigh, there were road works when we walked it but still a safe pathway through. I would be interested in looking at the other footpaths from Chudleigh to Gappah as mentioned in previous reviews/ comments, assuming it would take in more greenery but the current path is fine too.

Keep an eye out for Haytor and Chudleigh Rocks throughout the walk as there are some nice views of them.

There are stiles, steps, gates, cows, footpath bridges, long grass and uneven footpaths. No benches or facilities once out of the towns.

I’m hesitant on recommending this route to others but it does get you from a to b. The paths either side of Clay Lane are beautiful and would be a really nice route but I’m not sure how safe Clay Lane itself is to walk along.

I created this route to fix an access issue with Chukin One. 99% of it is a lovely - gorgeous river, woodland, fields... the only issue is about 200 metres of road walking. I was OK with this as the verge had been cut recently, but it was a busy road and would be too hairy for people who are not comfortable with busy roads. Ideally a new footpath would be created to tackle this issue. If that was the case, it would get 4 or 5 stars and verified from me... as it is, I'm giving it three and a "maybe".

ChuKin is potentially a real cracker. But it has 3 weaknesses. Unquestionably the worst of these is the short Rixpark Corner to River Teign section you rightly identify. I could find no viable alternative. I have contacted Devon Roads asking if the verge could be improved by a small amount of widening and levelling – it seems such a small improvement but without it, like you, I am hesitant to verify beyond “maybe”.
The second is the lengthy and irregularly pavemented Broadway Road stretch into/out of Kingsteignton. To this I see no alternative although there are new house building sites under construction which may offer options in a year or two.
The third is the B3344 (Station Rd) exit from Chudleigh. Perhaps instead: the pedestrian friendly Clifford Street, Kate Brook, Garden Pot Lane, then climbing (all on signposted paths) to the Ugbrooke Estate boundary wall, and finally taking the very minor lane to Gappah. This section is equally as delightful and tranquil as the River Teign section, though in a totally different way. No traffic noise or fumes – just lots of blackberries! I hesitate to upload a ChuKin3 unless you want me to? My track recorded 9.74km as opposed to ChuKin2’s 9.6.
If that 200m stretch can be sorted I would verify ChuKin as a 4, with the Clifford Street start variation as well a 5. Not sorted and only a “may be!” verification.
