Survey Photos
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

11 Mar 2024This route is fine for walking, but is wetter and potentially muddier than the alternative route Chucla two. There is also more elevation difference. Rough surfaces, mud essentially all year in places, and some steep slopes would make it very difficult for a wheelchair. But in many ways the worst aspect of this route is crossing the Blackburn Road (assuming you are going from Church to Clayton, not in the other direction). You meet the road on the inside of a bend, and it is difficult (especially at times of year when there are leaves on the trees) to get an adequate view of the traffic approaching from the right. Also, you are facing the middle of an Armco barrier on the other side of the road. My advice is to walk 40 yards left along the edge of the road until opposite the end of the Armco barrier, and cross there. This also gives you a longer view of traffic coming from the right.

28 Feb 2022From Church the route follows housing streets to the canal, which it soon leaves along a farm track, then a footpath, to pass underneath the M65 alongside Hyndburn Brook. The path continues alongside the river through nice countryside, unavoidably accompanied by motorway noise. It was fairly muddy, although in summer I imagine it would be better.
The road crossing of the A678 is tricky, especially heading north, due to the bend in the road here. The cars are relatively fast and it is difficult to see them coming.
The path continues, crossing a narrow wooden bridge (also muddy at the time) then crosses open grazing land. The are good views here, although at the time I walked it, there was a shooting club (All Arms Airsoft) down in the valley and I found the sound of it disturbing.
The route from here into Clayton-le-Moors was straightforward, along quiet housing streets. This was a very nice walk, and I would have given it 5* but for the busy road crossing.
