Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

26 Mar 2024Walked from Accrington to Church.
This is a very pleasant, predominantly off-road walk, making use of what was previously the railway track bed from a time where more than the current two lines were required.
This route is suitable for all types of wheels, with a large portion of the route forming national cycle route 6. There are some noticeable gradients when joining and leaving the formation of the old railway, however this would likely cause no issues for the majority of users.
There are no restrictive barriers, with bollards being well spaced where provided. A short, graffitied bridge passes below the active railway, but this doesn't really affect the safety of an otherwise well-established and accessible route.

28 Feb 2022This route is a little longer than ChuAcc One but it almost entirely avoids roads by using the off-road cycle track, which can be accessed right from Accrington Station. The track is in good condition: it has lighting and very little litter. It was very quiet when I used it on a Sunday teatime. The underpass into Church had graffiti though. The off-road protection lasts almost to the end of the Slow Ways route, with a pelican crossing at the roundabout. I found this a very nice alternative to urban road walking.
