Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

18 May 2024I walked this route from Staveley. Heading out of the town centre the route picks up the route of the transpennine trail heading southwards. This provides firm, level walking in woodland. After the Inkersall Green housing estate the route veers eastwards along the Bamford Road with a wide pavement to reach a footpath which soon drops quite steeply into West Wood on a wide but muddy path. After crossing the small stream it continues in woodland and rises to Brimington Common. It turns northwards on Brooke Drive, another quiet residential street, to meet Manor Road at a T junction. Almost opposite is a surfaced lane leading to Grove Road a wide unsurfaced track. The route then leaves the transpennine trail to descend along a narrow path which crosses a small valley to reach tarmac once more. Soon, at the entrance to Tapton Grange, the route enters an overgrown footpath between unkempt hedge, however after a short distance this becomes a wired corridor between horse paddocks. The route then turns west along the surfaced Wheathill lane (although this is a narrow minor road there is very little traffic. Soon the route regains the transpennine trail and descends across the golf course. There are frequent big blue arrows to point the route (but this diverges from the RoW shown on the OS map. Where to walk is obvious however. At the entrance to the golf club-house the route turns downhill on pavements and soon passes the railway station before entering Chesterfield making for the obvious twisted spire landmark. I enjoyed this route. Most of it is in countryside, and where it cuts through housing it follows good pavements.
