Description
This route is almost identical to BRESAN 1, which is almost a first class route, but I have clarified the GPX plot in three places where straight lines on the existing plot create possible confusion. Firstly where the Derby canal disappears under the M1 this version uses the shortcut rather than the muddy bridlepath. Secondly where it recrosses Longmoor Lane, the direct work does not work because the steps on the east side are closed and blocked by locked gates, hence the minor detour via Waterside Close which avoids the steps altogether. Thirdly where the Derby canal meets the Erewash canal, it is necessary to use the footbridge at the end of Lock Lane to cross the Erewash canal, and since the Derby canalside path here involves a couple of small steps I have plotted the route along Lock Lane instead

03 May 2023 (edited 04 May 2023)I created this route after attempting to follow BRESAN 1, which is a very good route but is rather badly plotted, and in my view this may cause confusion to anyone who is not familiar with the area.
Walked from Breaston to Ilkeston. An enjoyable and easy route that largely follows the line of the Derby canal, most of which no longer exists, though there are long term plans to rebuild it. There is one stile just west of the M1, which is only avoidable by walking along Longmoor Road rather than following the canal line through the fields - I think most active walkers would prefer the field path.
From the meeting point in Sandiacre, we cross Town Street and Station Road using pelican crossings, then find the track down to the canal where we take the towpath left, following it past the bridge under the A52. Beyond the lock, we cross the footbridge onto Lock Lane, which we follow a short distance (or use the old towpath which goes down two steps and along the grassy bank) then take the path left (formerly the Derby canal towpath, but beyond the first lock no trace of the canal remains). Before Longmoor Lane, take the surfaced path up to the right to reach Waterside Close (there should be, but isn't a notice at this point to advise walkers that this is the last escape that works before the blocked canal bridge, where the steps are also closed). We cross the busy Longmoor Road (there is an island which helps but no lights).
Beyond, a surfaced track continues along the old canal line, crossing Springfield Avenue and Bostock Lane. Beyond Bostock Lane there is a choice - the GPX line takes a short cut which avoids the muddiest section of the bridleway. Either way we rejoin Longmoor Road to cross under the M1 bridge, then follow the path right over a stile and through a series of gates and x`fields, some of which may contain horses, to reach Risley Lane, where we turn right and follow the road into Breaston, where the meeting point is a short distance right along Main Street.
