Description
My route from Braintree to Tiptree follows many of my favourite local rights of way. We leave Braintree using river paths and head towards the Galleys Corner underpass, going under the A120 and roundabout. This is a safe and pleasant route out of town and avoids crossing the very busy A120 at any point. From here on it's all countryside from the Braintree Garden Centre East to Coggeshall Hamlet.
In this section the footpaths are diverted in Tye Green Cressing during Spring/Summer 2024 for building works, so follow the B1018 and get back on route at Wrights Farm. There are some interesting twists and turns as the route winds around Bradwell Quarry, but they are well used and well signposted. From Coggeshall Hamlet we head South towards Kelvedon, which is an ideal point for breaking up the long 22km journey. We go right past Kelvedon Railway station, which has a reasonably priced large carpark if you want to drive in part way along the walk. You'll also find lots of nice pubs and shops along the historic old high street.
From Kelvedon towards Tiptree the footpaths are a mixture of nice wide farm tracks, field edges and a short section of old disused railway line. One of the footpaths runs directly behind Perry Woods Garden Centre. I'm sure you could nip through a hedge and get to the front entrance if you fancy a walk around this excellent site. The cafe is very good and in summer they open up the doors on the long sunny veranda. As we get closer to Tiptree the footpaths turn into tracks and then roads. Tiptree has plenty of carparks, big shops and places to eat

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
