Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Bramley to Heckfield:
This would be a very nice route to walk if a critical stile close to the Loddon river was not under water. It is easy to follow as most sections are never too far from the transmission overhead lines.
The start at Bramley is easy to follow as it's along paved paths and pavements. There don't seem to be any shops at Bramley except for a small bakery close to the railway station.
The first unpaved section off Folly Lane is passable though it was a bit muddy at times. The most problematic stretch is when the route crosses the river Loddon over a bridge behind the Lillymill Farm. See the first photo. The fields were soaked with water and the worst bit was when it was necessary to get through a hedge via a stile. The stile was under a deep water as can be seen on the second attached photo. I tried to walk round it by getting close to the river Loddon and that led me to Potters Lane from the other side of the river. However, I found that this detour was not suitable for public as it leads via a private property. The only public route there is via the stile which was under water when I walked there.
The rest of the route was ok. Just crossing Basingstoke road (A33) was a bit challenging. There is a filling station at Turgis Green where this route turns to another quiet road - Bottle Lane. The filling station has a shop inside.
When I passed the Wellesley pre-school I nearly missed a turn to the left. The right way is through the forest, not along its edge.
Heckfield doesn't seem to have any shops or other facilities incl. a bus stop so it's advisable to bring food and drink with you.

I would walk this route again only after at least 10 warm days with no rain to increase the likelihood that the flooded stile is useable.
