Description
This is a reworking of Boglit One, which corrects the access problem at Middleton, and also adjusts for the continuous coastal erosion in these parts.
From Bognor pier, follow the coastal path to Middleton: promenade and then some pebbly beach paths.
At Middleton the route turns inland and passes through the village. At time of making there is one pub (the Elmer), small stores, picnic areas. The alternative to turning inland is to walk along the beach, but this can be hard work because of the pebbles and groynes.
After Middleton the path continues along the coast, and at one point there is significant erosion meaning it may well shift after a storm. At Climping the route passes behind the sea defences and eventually reaches a golf course on the outskirts of Littlehampton. There is a narrow footpath alongside the golf course, which leads all the way to Littlehampton, and the railway station.
A mix of easy promenade, pebbles, narrow uneven footpaths and some urban pavement.
Refreshments at Middleton.
The sea is taking the coast quite rapidly in this area, and the route may need regular reviews to keep it accurate

31 May 2023** Stinging nettles in growing season, full cover required **
** Slippery mud alert in winter months (same path but at least there won’t be nettles) **
Walked Bognor to Littlehampton, sunny late spring day. Good route.
Bognor was busy with people walking and wheeling along the prom. The path eventually changed to be rougher and more pebbly underfoot.
It’s frustrating that there is not a good coastal path all the way; at Middleton I turned inland on a pleasant lane to join the main road through the village.
There was only one pub operating; another had a large sign outside trying to recruit a tenant. At least one convenience store too.
I tried a few options for getting back to the beach before I settled on the eventual route, which avoids private roads and extra pebbles.
There is one eroded field where the path is already falling away; at Climping beach there is a lot of sea defence, I couldn’t see the beach for the mountain of pebbles, and the footpath is on a raised bank of pebbles.
The route turned inland, where there is a narrow lush footpath which had a lot of stinging nettles up to about my shoulder/head height. Long trousers and sleeves a necessity.
Finally into Littlehampton and a train home.
This is a pleasant interesting coastal walk but not perhaps quite as easy going as I was expecting, mainly due to the pebbly bits. The footpath between Littlehampton and the coast is mostly lovely and wild, but the short nettley section was unexpected and unwanted!.
