25 Apr 2024This was a lovely straightforward route connecting two places both with lots of facilities. Access to the canal towpath at Barnoldswick was via a set of shallow steps. The towpath was partly compacted gravel and partly earth with some mud in places. The canal here wiggled quite a lot to follow the contours, but the biggest wiggles were avoided by following the Pennine Way for the last third of the route. This section included stiles and gates but was well waymarked. However it was boggy in places following a very wet winter.
The Lock Stop Café at Greenberfield was closed while the owners try to findsomeone to run it in the future (and has been closed for a year), but that is only 20% into the route from Barnoldswick. At East Marton there is a pub marked on the OS map but I think this has been closed for quite a few years. The route includes a small diversion at Williamson Bridge just after the double arch bridge to Abbots Harbour café/restaurant but this appears to have fairly limited opening hours. I didn't find any other refreshment stops on the route. This was the only disadvantage of this otherwise very enjoyable walk.

05 Nov 2023This is a lovely route comprised of the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath and the Pennine Way. The walk starts in the centre of Barnoldswick. After a short walk out of the town, the canal is reached and first half of the walk follows the towpath. This is generally in a good condition and level, meaning it is suitable for wheelchairs and buggys. After about 3.5 miles on the towpath, you pass under the A59. The bridge here is worth a view as it has an unusual double arch. Please note that the OS map indicates that there is a pub close by, but at the time of this review, this was unfortunately closed. However, after reaching the lane, there is however a tearoom as short distance to the left.
After a few hundred yards on a quiet lane, follow the Pennine Way as signposted on the right. From here, the well signposted route gently undulates across farmland, hence will be muddy when wet. There are views of the canal to the left and the Yorkshire Dales ahead.
Eventually, Gargrave comes into sight and after crossing the railway line, take the path to the right into the village, which has accommodation, pubs, tearoom, curry house, fish and chip shop, and a Co-op.
