Description
The original 'Bambla one' included a non-existent bridge for the crossing of the River Darwen at Hoghton Bottoms (it collapsed a few years ago). This new route includes a pleasant 1.5km detour to use the next footbridge. It also now has just one railway level crossing at Gregson Lane

31 Mar 2024I walked from Bamber Bridge to Blackburn at the end of March following a particularly wet couple of months. The fields were rather waterlogged, and quite a few parts of the route, especially around gates, were exceptionally muddy. I was tempted to give only 3* but it was really a mostly picturesque and enjoyable route, so I’ll assume it’s not usually this bad! There was a mossy ford to cross, so I was glad I’d brought my trekking pole on its first outing. There was also a small stream, surprisingly dry, with stepping stones, but these weren’t a problem.
For me, the route became really nice from Hoghton onwards, with wide views across Lancashire’s hills, and a gorgeous area descending from the railway to Hoghton Bottoms. After my packed lunch there, I made a little detour to visit the viaduct where the railway crosses the River Darwen.
The road at Butler’s Bridge was very busy with Good Friday holiday traffic, so I used the playing field alongside it, and the old bridge next to the plotted route. The section through Witton Country Park was heaving with visitors to a noisy funfair, but I’m sure it’s normally very pleasant! The last section through the outskirts of Blackburn followed the Blackburn Stride and Ride route (including a couple of annoying parked cars), and ended with a nice walk around the cathedral to the station.
I enjoyed going over the Hoghton Viaduct on the train back home!.

06 May 2021An excellent route with some spectacular scenery through Hoghton and Pleasington. Requires careful navigation through the fields at Gregson Lane but otherwise it’s a clear route, including a loop to avoid the collapsed bridge over the River Darwen at Hoghton Bottoms. There are two railway level crossings (at Gregson Lane and Hoghton) and some steep sections.
