Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

08 May 2022Review of SlowWays Route Allcla1 (Alloa - Clackmannan)
I walked this route in reverse (Clackmannan to Alloa) on a breezy morning in April 2022. It is a lovely route but I guess not popular as I met no-one between the last tarmac in Clackmannan and the first tarmac in Alloa. This was not a problem for me as I enjoy walking quietly and observing wildlife. However some sections may feel a little lonely to some.
The route leaves Clackmannan Main Street and heads uphill via High Street and through a gate leading to a grassy track across a pasture field (which sometimes contains livestock, although not on the day I visited). The track passes to the right (north) of the impressive Clackmannan Tower with amazing views to the south. At this point, the recommended route heads for the north west corner of the field. There is a barbed wire-topped fence here which should be negotiated with care. I tried heading straight ahead to a gate just before “King’s Seat” (a rocky viewpoint), but I still had to negotiate the fence further on. I could not see a gate which would have allowed me to avoid climbing the fence.
Whichever route is followed, the walker eventually reaches an earth path running east-west, parallel to the fence line and the Black Devon burn. Following this path west leads to the corner of an arable field and another path which skirts the field along its northern edge and eventually leads (through lovely woodland with swathes of Bluebells) to a narrow road bridge over the burn. The route crosses this bridge and follows the road for a short distance before turning left to arrive on Alloa Park Drive. This road is followed for a short distance before the route turns into a lane running along the southern edge of a residential street called “Camach”. The lane continues in a westerly direction through trees until just before it emerges onto Forth Crescent at which point it heads north and uphill into the trees (on an earth path) before emerging at the southwest corner of a big warehouse. A more formal path then appears ahead and the route follows this all the way into the centre of Alloa, passing the entrance to the Forth Valley College (Note the lovely views to the north). A few town streets lead the walker past the “Copper vessel” (a local landmark) and across busy King Street onto a final path up to Alloa Train Station and the end of the route.
This is a very pleasant route although with a couple of very slightly tricky sections (the barbed wire-topped fence and the uphill path before Forth Crescent”). It could be negotiated by most walkers but would be difficult or impossible for most of those on wheels. I have deducted one star for the slightly tricky sections but overall I would recommend the route.
