10 May 2023This a very direct route but not necessarily the best. More road walking than really necessary with walking on roads minus pavements in a few sections. A route sticking to the cycle path would be a little longer but make for a more enjoyable walk. Will suggest a new route.

29 Mar 2022 (edited 22 May 2023)This is a short walk on a footpath created from an old railway line, so it`s generally either flat or slightly up and down (generally inclining going up the valley). The path leaving Pontypool is shown through the Tesco supermarket car park, which is no good for wheel chairs (the ramp has steps on it), but an alternative is to go through the town centre and up George Street, which brings you out on to the rail path a little further up at Wainfelin.
The path then leaves the "upper" railway path, which goes on all the way to Blaenavon and Brynmawr, and follows the road to the "lower" railway path that takes you into Abersychan. One note of caution here - the road leaving the upper path (Merchant`s Hill) has no footpath and is on a bit of an S-bend as you go over the bridge, so some care is needed here, especially for wheelers. After this bit, the lower path continues through the tunnel under the main road (A4043).
