Help connect Abersychan
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Abersychan’s Slow Ways.

And just to be clear, at the junction of the road and the railway path going in the Abersychan Blaenavon direction, you jink left after you have gone under the railway to access the path....

There were around 5 sections where the footpath was either overgrown, just disappeared into nothing or access just wasn`t there. I will propose an alternative, but it will probably involve a lot of lane walking, as I`m not seeing an easy way around some of the troublesome sections! The green lane leaving Abersychan down to Gypsy Lane...

A fine walk through varied countryside including woodland, fields, country lanes, the Mon & Brec Canal and the River Usk. After the initial woods on leaving Abersychan, the route follows Folly Lane (with the Pontypool Folly close by on the top of the ridge), before descending down the old roman road (there are some stretches with cobble stones still in place, but in most places the stones are loose and it can be tricky under foot) into Mamhilad. After a short section along the Mon & Brec Canal, the path then led through fields, although some of the styles here were not easy to locate, and some were in poor condition....

Start of the route could possibly head up to the old railway path a little earlier, but difficult to fault a pleasant, interesting route that climbs up into the heads of the valleys....
Steven Coombs
More road walking than really necessary with walking on roads minus pavements in a few sections. A route sticking to the cycle path would be a little longer but make for a more enjoyable walk. Will suggest a new route....
Steven Coombs
The path then leads slowly up into the Sychan valley, a steady plod uphill following the upper side of a fence (Photo 1), but as the path deviates and goes up the hill side, there are lots of criss-crossing paths, so some care is needed to keep the heading. Again some great views looking down towards Six Bells in the Ebbw Fach valley (Photo 3). Photo 1 - The path leading up the Sychan Valley...

The path then leaves the "upper" railway path, which goes on all the way to Blaenavon and Brynmawr, and follows the road to the "lower" railway path that takes you into Abersychan....
Paul Chilcott
The path then follows the roman road and joins up with a lane that takes you into the village of Mamhilad. The path leaves the canal at bridge 91 and heads downhill through the fields into Llanellen, where it follows the main road into Abergavenny. A more peaceful alternative, although a couple of miles longer is to carry on along the canal path to Llanfoist at bridge 95A, turn right down the steps on to the lane, cross the main road at the bottom, follow the lane through the tunnel under the A465 Heads of the Valleys road, straight on up the footpath and turn right on to the lane that goes down past the cemetery to the main A4143 road into Abergavenny....
Paul Chilcott
The walk starts off on the main A4043 road, but soon switches to the less busy Ffrwd Road before the steep incline up Lower Harpers Road that takes you on to the railway path....
