More road walking than really necessary with walking on roads minus pavements in a few sections. A route sticking to the cycle path would be a little longer but make for a more enjoyable walk. Will suggest a new route....

I'm familiar with the canal and it is perfect for walking and getting between Cwmbran and Pontypool. Pontypool Park is also a fab little gem of a public park. If only all Slow Ways were this practical and easy on the eye!...

Most of the paths are well trodden though and over the mountain top, it`s just a matter of taking a path as close as possible to the forestry land, while staying on the open moors....

The path then leaves the "upper" railway path, which goes on all the way to Blaenavon and Brynmawr, and follows the road to the "lower" railway path that takes you into Abersychan....

If walking from Usk, the footpath is clearly marked from the road (just right of the bridge) but isn’t so obvious from the field facing the wooded slope: walk straight on past the dilapidated orange truck (see pic) and look for the broken stile and path heading diagonally up the slope....

The walk gets off to a great start through Pontypool Park with all its greenery, but most of the walk is along the wonderful Mon & Brec canal....

After walking through New Inn village, the path heads into the countryside lanes (Photo 2) and the first series of fields. This takes you past Llandegfedd Reservoir (Photo 3) and Coed-y-Paen village, before winding its way towards Usk....

One of the places where it was clear was on walking down Blaendare Road on the outskirts of Pontypool, where the signed footpath is totally blocked (after the college and short row of houses, but before the school grounds start)....
