Starting from Waterhouses the pavement ends where the minor road forks right so I took this road and then an ORPA (Other Route with Public Access) back to the main road this reduced the busy road section to just 500ft or 150M there is a narrow verge to step onto. The linking path to the back road is interesting looking like a private drive. We finally meet the road at Okeover Mill before crossing the Manifold to enter Derbyshire....

It starts with an evident path across grass but as the dale narrows the path is distinct but less even over lumps of limestone. Dropping down another dale into the Manifold Valley along a path with more limestone which can be slippery, polished by the feet of visitors. The path along the course of what was the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway is like walking a country lane to Waterhouses with the only passing traffic, bicycles. Meeting the road at Waterhouses stay with the cycle path which passes through the old station where more loos and benches are provided before a short walk to the meeting place which has seats but alongside the busy main road....

I created the route and have walked all of it apart from the main road and lane to Calton which I have driven, over the past couple of years. The main road out of Waterhouses is unpleasant and could be dangerous....

Approaching Waterfall, the grass gets longer and the footpath is more difficult to identify. It gets easier through Waterfall going through country lanes but soon enough it's into footpaths that appear not to have been walked for years, knee-high grass, nettles and brooks and ditches which can only be navigated by jumping over....
