06 Aug 2024I can not see any difference between Watbig 1 and Watbig 2.
I have walked all of these routes within the past few years and they are good routes..
The Manifold Trail (from immediately west of Wetton to Waterhouses) is tarmac and can be a bit monotonous when walking. Cycling preferred. I will create an alternative route!
The Rivers Hamps and Manifold are seasonal and in summer the flow is entirely underground. The River Hamps falls into the river bed near the Waterhouses sewage works, hence the parish/village name of Waterfall and it comes out again at Hamps Springs near Ilam Hall. The River Manifold (many bends) falls down holes just downstream of Wetton Mill and the resurgence is at Ilam Hall.
Thor's Cave, a little west of Wetton is well worth the detour. There is a permissive path from from the cave to Wetton which avoids losing any height. It is shown on OpenStreetMap but not the Ordnance Survey topographic and only partially on the Ordnance Survey standard view.
There are pubs in Wetton and Alstonefield but check on opening.
Biggin Dale is a bit rough underfoot.
