Help connect Southminster

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Southminster’s Slow Ways.

Just after South Chase Farm the route turns south on a footpath over fields, joining the route of Malsou One. It goes through a small woodland to emerge on Mill Road which you take a short distance south before taking an eastbound footpath. After a short stretch of eastwards road walking there’s a public footpath going south along the field edge by Sunfield Farm. The route is then a diagonal south-east across the sward, crossing the drive to Mayland Court and then taking a sharper slant to exit onto Southminster Road at the drive entrance to Hemmells.

A short road walk is necessary to reach Ewenny Farm on the south side of Southminster Road. It’s eastward road walking on Old Heath Road until the next northbound footpath you find (shortly before Filey Road), this turns east around the settlement of Old Heath and continues on a footpath across an agricultural field....

This is a fine rural route taking in sea walls, field paths and the lovely St Mary’s Mundon. There’s a reasonable grass verge on the south side of Steeple Road until there’s pavement again on the north side of the road. I’m not convinced this is safe enough for road walking (the alternative Malsou three that I’ve added avoids this).

The route proceeds on a public footpath going south along the field edge by Sunfield Farm. The route is then diagonal south-east across the sward, crossing the drive to Mayland Court then taking a sharper slant to exit onto Southminster Road at the drive entrance to Hemmells.

A short road walk west is necessary to Ewenny Farm on the south side of Southminster Road. Ignore the private signs, phoney cameras and alarms to take the PROW south to Old Heath Road. It’s an eastward road walking on Old Heath Road. This Slow Ways route takes the road to the junction with Burnham Road before turning north on a footpath across the fields. To avoid some of the road walking you can instead take the next northbound footpath you find (shortly before Filey Road), this turns east around the settlement of Old Heath and joins the designated route in the field....

When Glendale Road meets Marsh Road this route diverges from Bursou one and heads east on Marsh Road. Once over the bridge, it’s road walking again, but after a short distance, there is a grass verge on the south side of the road. After the pond, the public right of way takes a diagonal path across a field to re-meet the hard farm track, most walkers eschew the field route and simply proceed along the track. At Newmans Farm the route continues northwards along a field edge, this is unpaved and can be rough underfoot. A pragmatic approach suggests using tractor tracks through the crops or sticking to the field edges whichever seems appropriate at the time.

The right of way continues alongside the hedgerow leading northwards....

When Glendale Road meets March Road the route continues on a public footpath directly ahead. Mill Road has no pavement, so it’s road walking here but it's a low-traffic route. Do not put off by signs indicating this is a private road as this is a public right of way. This footpath ends at a hedgerow and a slightly ramped rise to pavement alongside the Burnham Road (B1021)...

A straightforward route between the two towns with only a short stretch of busy road (mitigated by decent pavement). We didn't stop to explore St Leonard's church near the start (photo 1) but I suspect it'd be worth a diversion if you've time. The finger post indicating the path you should take away from the B1021 soon after leaving Southminster is partially obscured by the hedgerow it leans toward (photo 2), but obvious once you're alongside it....
