Help connect Failsworth

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Failsworth’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

It includes a substantial section of walking along suburban roads and a couple of sections in fields which were muddy and slippy. I'm not convinced that anyone will ever really want to walk between these two places but should they do, my preference would be to use faiash three which removes most of the road walking for only a marginal increase in distance....

This route is unfortunately blocked by the closure of a footbridge over the river Medlock in Brookdale golf club. Two alternative routes have been added - one is this route with the necessary diversion, a second is a slightly longer version which removes much of the road-walking....

Walk this route

Surface is paved along its length and reasonably good quality tarmac along the canal, with some short sections of set-stones under road bridges by locks. The canal section passes by derelict industrial sites now reclaimed by nature which are slowly being turned into housing. Astonishingly saw a kingfisher on this route....

Walk this route

I enjoyed this walk from Manchester City centre to failsworth, the route was easy to follow and perfect for the sunshine. if it was to be rainy I can imagine the terrain becoming muddy therefore less accessible. I would recommend this route and would personally walk again....

Walk this route

the beginning of this route was enjoyable, along the canal. However, the ending was very confusing. part of the road on the route was closed today so a detour had to be made as well as the route being of course for the last quarter of the walk. I think Manfal two is for sure better and would recommend that one instead. Failsworth tram stop does have a lift so it is fully accessible....

This is a pleasant route almost entirely off-road and through some nice green spaces....

RGW added Faidro two, a new walk from Failsworth to Droylsden

Walk this route

This is an adequate route, the only problem being that there is a substantial amount of on-road walking that can easily be avoided using clear footpaths. See alternative route Faidro Two for an alternative. Note that the section through Medlock Vale is on footpaths which would be muddy after wet weather and have some steep sections up wooden steps....

Walk this route

The route is generally fine following the Rochdale Canal. However, the GPX plot is not very accurate and the route out of Manchester city centre could be more direct. This issues are corrected for in Manfai two....

Walk this route

There are short steep sections at the many locks along this section of canal including three flights of steps (including one where the route leaves the tow path at Failsworth). Sections of the canal can seem surprisingly isolated for such an urban location....

The route map could be better (the route tries to take you through car parks including a closed one, and the route just implies you take the canal after Ancoats rather than accurately showing it)....

Pleasant walk, following the tow path along Rochdale canal all the way to Failsworth, but preferably continue till Chadderton (Mills Hill station; 14 km altogether). I walked on a Sunday morning, passed innumerable locks and enjoyed the mixture of industrial history and modern life....
