Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Coupar Angus’s Slow Ways.

This route connects the ancient market town on Blairgowrie with Coupar Angus, once a strong monastic centre. It is the longer of the two mapped routes and does two sides of a triangle to go about twice the distance as the direct route between the two towns. The towns are connected by an almost hourly bus service with cafés at both ends so this is a good route to do as a day out with a return by bus. Leaving the centre of town, the route crosses the R. There is a pavement initially but this stops at the end of the town and the route continues along the country road. At Grange of Aberbothrie, keep to the track that passes through the farm yard on the north eastern side of the farmhouse and ignore the route on the map which passes through someone's garden. Isla almost the whole route to Coupar Angus....

It then takes the waymarked River Ericht path nearly as far as Kitty Swanson's Bridge, beside the River Ericht. Once on the quiet road the River Isla can be crossed on the road bridge. Blacou one uses the top of the river flood dyke almost all the way back to Coupar Angus. I have deducted one star, because this route is very circuitous, and another because of the potentially overgrown route along the eastern end of the river dyke, and the fence to climb....

The route is reasonably easy to follow other for the way through the suburbs of Dundee where careful navigation is required. A doorbell in a drystane wall (whose is it?) near Hallyburton House; I gave this route 4 stars as it easy to follow, has stunning views and presents lots of wildlife spotting opportunities It's drawbacks are only a short section on a verge near Camperdown Park, it passes by the Overgate Shopping centre which is closed outside business hours and there is no refreshment opportunities along the route...

Generally, this is a good route but it does have one unsuitable section at the Coupar Angus end of the route where a core path has become overgrown with brambles and is currently unable to follow....

It is correctly mapped and easy to follow, although care must be taken to follow the correct route in Hallyburton Estate and within Dundee. Within Dundee the main roads are crossed using an underpass, an island, and traffic lights, but a short stretch of Liff Road is dangerous to cross (to use a narrow pavement on the northern side), and there is no pavement for a few yards if one stays on its southern side. Heading out of Coupar Angus, the route follows a footway beside the A923 until it takes a left turn onto a quiet road, then a field path to Kettins. North of Denhead of Gray, and Wester Gourdie Industrial Estate the route uses trodden paths towards the bend in Liff Road at Gourdie. There is a rough verge on the south side of Liff Road, but crossing the road could be dangerous here due to the lack of visibility at the bend. Overall a good and varied route, scenic in places, but I cannot give it 5 stars due to the short stretch of verge (or crossing Liff Road at a potentially dangerous point), quite a lot of walking along minor, if very quiet roads, and the lack of a resting point along its considerable length....

Initially we were able to follow a field edge, then at a field boundary we had to climb over a field gate although a second one did open easily. The 2 sunny pictures relate to this route where it leaves the quiet road near Fifebanks and takes to West Den of Balruddery, using a field edge....

The anticipated difficulty of using the main road near Couttie Bridge did not materialise. However on the north side of the bridge the pavement reduced to nothing, and it was necessary to keep to the very edge of the road. A blind bend was visible ahead, with no verges into which to retreat, but luckily there was no ditch, hedge or fence so I was able to cross into the adjacent field and walk along the field edge parallel to the main road. For anyone heading southwards, towards Coupar Angus, it would probably be safer to take to the field edge just before joining the main road and use it until just before the bridge. From here again the most direct way into Blairgowrie is along the pavement beside the main road, whilst Blacou two follows a mixture of quiet residential roads, cycle route and pavements. I cannot give this route 5 stars as the use of the field edge just north of the Couttie Bridge is a bit tricky....

Walk this route

This is a good route, following mainly farm tracks and minor roads, apart from where it crosses fields just east of the A94 midway along the route. There was very little traffic on the roads, but the northern part of the route, after Damside, is almost exclusively on tarmac, so quite hard on the feet.. The final section of the route, down into Coupar Angus, is on a 'Walking and cycling friendly road', with a speed limit of 40mph. 1) Midway along the route it crosses a field just east of the A94, and the route is not very clear (although it is a core path here),...

I also found it easier just to follow the road up to Fifebanks, rather than trying to follow the path along Dron Burn. Would suggest turning left when leaving the path from Kettins and just walking into to town via the Dundee Road....
