17 Aug 2023A pleasant walk along the quality Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) linking two urban locations through a green corridor. I'm not sure about the meeting place serving the wider Worsborough and the route could be improved for wheels but an enjoyable walk.
I started at the Worsborough meeting place which has no distinction other than two seats. Located at Worsborough Dale it fails to serve the wider area of the multi named settlement.
The route quickly meets the TPT at the Boatmans Rest although no sign of boats or even water. The trail has a hard surface while the edges were muddy in places but we had had a lot of rain, through a wide corridor of greenery it makes a pleasant and quiet walk.
Passing under the tall viaduct which carries an active rail line our path forks off and climbs to follow a narrow path along a field edge before joining a very quiet, no traffic, lane. We leave this, following the accurate plotting, along an unrecorded track which climbs and is a little uneven but well used.
Meeting the road it's tarmac all the way including a footpath along the edge of a green space and then on the pavement alongside the cemetery. A feature I had not seen before was what appears to be an official arrangement to fix brass memorial plaques to the railing which can be read from the pavement. A feature I had seen before in northern parts was the terrace of houses, where the roof follows the slope of the road while the floors and windows step down the hill.
Turning into the main shopping road I wondered if the meeting place had been poorly located because a perfect looking seat and bus shelter was the first thing I saw. But no, Wombwell has seats for the whole of South Yorkshire, take your pick along a promenade of shops where public seating rivals the front at Cleethorpes.
