Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route from Maryport to Workington on a very breezy afternoon.

The route is easy to walk and follow as it follows the English coastal path. The English coastal path is well way marked. There are no significant gradients on this walk. There are no gates or styles, but there are a number of footbridges some of which have a step or two.

Maryport is a coastal town with all facilities including a bus and train links.

The walk starts next to the harbour and follows the English coastal path. Once the path leaves the harbour area it is largely a rough track. There are very easy to find alternatives where the path is tarmacked. Follow the path along the coast to Filmby.

At Flimby the official slow way includes a number of footbridges and a couple of sections where the beach becomes the path. The beach can difficult to walk on, however there is an alternate English Costal path high tide route which is clearly way marked. This alternate route is on footpaths that run alongside the A596 and offer easy walking.

After passing Flimby (in front at Thomas Armstrong) the route now becomes a well defined but rough path across seaside terrain. This path is well sign posted as the English Coastal Path. Follow this path alongside the railway until Siddick is reached. Then the path leaves the railway and follow the coast. This path then takes a route right under a number of wind turbines and along an interesting and under visited section of coast line.

Just keep following the signs for the English coastal path until the roundabout at Northside is reached. Once at the roundabout, follow the roadside path alongside the river until a footpath branches to the right over a footbridge, this cycle track takes you to the centre of Workington.

The national cycle route 72 also goes from Maryport to Workington.
