Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

05 Jun 2022Walked this route from Cleator Moor to Workington.
It was a beautiful summers day.
The route crosses various types of terrain, making some sections very difficult to follow. The route has no steep climbs but it does undulate. There are sitles, gates and steps on this route.
Cleator Moor is a rural market town with all faculties.
The route begins by following the main route from Cleator Moor to Keekle, there are wide pavements along the side of the road.
After crossing the bridge at Keekle turn right onto a well marked path. The path quickly deteriorates into a open field, which had long grass at the time of walking. To exit the fields there was as style.
Turn left onto the road. This was a narrow road with no grass verges, on the day of the walk it appeared to be very busy. Walk along the road and take the first right.
The walk is now on a track, whish is followed until the first house is reached, go to the left of the house and follow a path through the woods. This was an enjoyable part of the walk on a well maintained path. Follow a path until it ends at a minor road.
The official route turn left and follows the road (minor road with no grass verges) to Moresby Parks. However I turned right and there is a marked path, almost directly opposite, which meets a cycle rack that leads to Moresby Parks.
The route now follows the main road through Moresby Parks on road pavements. There is a village shop in Moresby Parks. After leaving Moresby Parks take the first left onto a minor road, again no grass verges.
Follow the road past the house on the left and then at the bends take the footpath to the right. The route now follows footpaths and tracks all the way down to B5306 at Howgate. The final descent to Howgate is across open fields. At Howgate there is a Brewers Fayre and Premier Inn.
Turn left at the B5306 and follow the roadside path for a short way and then turn right onto a bridle way that goes under the A595. Once under the A595 follow the route through a gate and over a narrow bridge up to Lowca.
Once at Lowca there is a junction where 5 paths/tracks meet. It is possible to turn right and follow the cycle track all the way into Workington. However the official route goes up the hill.
Follow the path for a short way until just before the garages are reached, at this point look for a style and way marker pointing to the right. The route now crosses several fields. Towards the end of this section the path appears to run between two fields, there is a way marker. However the space has overgrown and is not passable. I choose to walk though the field on the left following the fence until Wardles Lonning was reached. Turn left up the hill, this is a minor road with no grass verges.
Follow the road until it meets the Lowca top road. Turn left and then almost immediately right onto a marked foot path that leads across an open field. Once the field has been crossed turn right onto the English Coastal path. This path can be followed all the way to the centre of Workington. This is now the same route as the Whitehaven to Workington slow way.
Sorry my pictures only cover part of the route.
