Description
Dogs are not allowed on this route. It crosses a grouse moor which has legal permission to exclude dogs, even dogs on leads. This route has a long section without any resting/eating places and is sometimes fairly steep and probably muddy and/or boggy. I’m submitting another route with a diversion that allows dogs but otherwise combining WolTow and TowCon might be an easier, if slightly longer, lowland alternative.
There is a long climb from Wolsingham up to the moor then across the tops and coming slowly down and joining the signposted “Waskerley Way”, a converted railway line and also a national cycle route. Road sections are either paved or on (seemingly) quiet, wide verged roads which are access only. The highest point is on a grouse moor, known as either Wolsingham North Moor or Sand Edge depending on the map.
Navigation
* Footpath just after leaving Waskerley Way for Castleside
OS disagrees with OSM and Google Street Maps about where this stile/gate off the road, but there are signposts. Also about what route to take across the fields. For both OSM and Google look more likely.
* Straight on for Consett
The route leaves the Waskerley Way briefly to get to Castleside but if you prefer you can go straight to Consett on the W. Way.
* Hownsgill Viaduct
The GPX file shows gradients of 23 and 22% at around 15 km. Ignore them! The route goes across Hownsgill Viaduct but the GPX doesn’t register it.
Eating / Sleeping
* Wolsingham (start): shops, pubs, takeaway, hotel, B&B.
* Bee Hill Cottage Farm aka Bonner Lodge: Guest house just metres from the route, roughly halfway at 8.5km.
* Castleside (detour N after 11km, loop adds about 0.5km): pubs, hotel, B&B, chippy, shop, cafe.
* Consett (end): Lots of shops, pubs, etc. Limited accommodation on the outskirts of town.
There is camping on Eliza Lane about 3.5km east of Bee Hill Cottage, very close to the TowCon One route which is likely a more natural fit if tents are your thing.
I haven't visited this area and I’ll be pleased if people can suggest improvements or upload alternatives

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
