Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

27 Oct 2024 (edited 31 Oct 2024) Autumn

I walked this from Ottershaw to Woking, on a warm but grey afternoon. It had rained a little in the preceding week, and I also had a few drops on my head during the walk.

From Ottershaw, the first section is along a road (photo #1), and then a quieter residential road, before going onto a very quiet lane that turns into a wooden path, full of colours this time of year (photo #2). The ground was a little muddy (photo #3). The path comes out on Row Town, which doesn't have a lot of pavement (photo #4), but there wasn't a lot of traffic and fairly pleasant. After passing the garden centre, the route continues on lovely wooded paths (photo #5, #6).

Crossing the B385 at the Victoria was easy with a (new) zebra crossing. Faris Lane was annoying due to the many cars. No idea why they were going up and down as it's a dead end (photo #7). Crossing the lock on a narrow foot bridge was fun (photo #8).

The rest of the route is alongside the Basingstoke Canal. The colours were really lovely, and it's really easy to walk too (photo #9, #10, #11). When coming of it at the Woking End, I recommend you use the underpass underneath Victoria Way, as it has an interesting War of the Worlds themed mosaic (photo #12). The last stretch to the station isn't very captivating, but it is short (photo #13).

Great route, would walk again!

Photos to follow.

Woking to Ottershaw
A very enjoyable route that is not too long either. There are mighty trees along the way so walkers are mostly shielded from the sun.
It is easy to follow but I noticed one inaccuracy. When the route crosses the Basingstoke Canal towpath, the little bridge is some 40m further on.

When it then reaches Woodham Lane at the Victoria pub (see the first photo), it continues along a footpath on the other side of the road, not a paved street with a "private access" sign.
I also made a mistake further on when the route turns off Row Town road at the Cricketers pub. There is a crossroads with three possible roads ahead. The right one is in the middle where you can see a red litterbin. See the last photo.

Even though the towpath and the first 7km from Woking would be perfectly good for wheelers, the last footpath through a forest before Ottershaw has a relatively steep incline.

This was a lovely walk that I enjoyed a lot. It's very calm and mostly in nature apart from the beginning and end. Can be completed by any age and doesn't take too long either.

A pretty unchallenging walk during the enjoyable Basingstoke Canal towpath part - well-surfaced and pretty wide, plenty to see. Passing the A245 requires either a nimble cross of the road (no pedestrian crossing) or going under the road in a fairly low and narrow passageway.

Thereafter a short amble to Woodham Lane, and then a somewhat more narrow country path walk until you hit Woodham Park Rd.

Easy walk up the road into Row Town, then a left through a more restricted country footpath, with a narrow muddier part and an obstacle or two for, wheelchair users or even the less confident walker. Footpath ends at Ottershaw Junior school - then very plain sailing on pavements into Ottershaw itself.

There was at least a traffic island crossing the A245 at the Victoria now. Perhaps that's new though.

    Sorry, a zebra crossing even.
