Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

20 Feb 2024This route has issues, particularly issues with access around Rendlesham estate. The entirety of this estate is surrounded by fences and private land, the ONLY means of access is from the A1152 which is a busy road with no pavement for much of its length. On this route the section along the A1152 between TM 335 529 and TM 331 527 is on a grass verge without a formal pavement.
A predominantly rural route from the centre of Rendlesham estate to the square in Wickham Market. There are lengthy sections along roads, but these are usually quiet. This route has stiles at the railway crossing and can be very wet around the river valley.
Apart from amenities at either end of this route, there are food, water and toilet facilities at The Duck in Campsea Ashe (TM 325 556) a short detour from the route. There is also a train station here with hourly services to Lowestoft and Ipswich.
We walked from Rendlesham on a wet day.
The initial part of the route through the Rendlesham estate is uninspiring; at the point where you emerge onto the A1152 there is no pavement and you need to walk along the grass verge at the side of this busy road for 1/4 mile.
Once onto Ash Road to traffic drops significantly and although this is not a designated Quiet Lane our walk was not interrupted with too many vehicles.
After leaving Ash Road the footpath across to the railway is obvious, but you have to change to the other side of the hedge at the farm. There are stiles in the fence either side of the railway.
After the railway the route is marked to turn north-northeast and follow a narrow path under trees and alongside the railway. This route is popular with dog walkers! After emerging into the back of the village the route turns along Mill Lane. I would recommend walkers to stick to the footpath from the railway directly to Mill Lane, unless you wish to go to the pub or the station. Mill Lane is a designated Quiet Lane.
At the end of Mill Lane the path into The Oaks is not very obvious, follow the tree line with the trees on your right. The route soon picks up a track through the woods as it heads towards the River Deben. From the footbridge over the river (TM315 552) to the A12 underpass (TM309 556) the path is in low lying fields and gets flooded very quickly, at times this can be impassable.
Once under the main road the path climbs slowly to the centre of Wickham Market.
