Description
This route follows the NCR 1, the cinder track, from Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay.
It is a very easy footpath with a good flat surface that is easy for any wheeled device.
It's not as close to the sea but you still get good views.
You have to cross a main road but it is traffic light controlled and there are a couple of gates. The surface is either asphalt or compacted cinders

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

25 Jul 2024I would probably class this as a near perfect SlowWay in terms of easy of travel. The old railway line, the presence of under and over bridges and even a pedestrian crossing make this the easiest route I've so far completed.

16 Apr 2024I walked this Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby, following the Cinder Track. A popular route on a sunny Sunday with walkers and cyclists. I saw one pram on route containing a dog.. The track follows the old railway route and is a less demanding walk than the coastal route, but you still have some good views out to the coast. The surface at the Robin Hoods Bay end has a lot of large stones and has not been ground down, which would make prams and wheelchairs more challenging, but if you approach from Whitby you are on a slow descent which might help.

29 Sep 2021A very pleasant route that is easy and safe.
Ideal for push chairs and wheelchairs. It's an old railway track so it doesn't have any really steep parts but it isn't flat.
It's popular with walkers, dog walker and cyclists but its a wide track and i had no problems.
