Description
The original route spends a lot of time on roads through Dunston missing all the excellent riverside views. I have adapted the route following feedback from the reviewer of WHIGAT1. The new route now follows the cycle path from St Omers Road (pic 9 & 10) and then turns left before the River Team to cross at the bridge to join the riverside footpath along past the Staithes. It then joins the old route and climbs under the Redheugh Bridge to cross the Askew Road dual carriageway on the concrete footbridge.
I walked this route from Whickham to Gateshead - thus enjoying a largely down hill route. The reverse has a steep section up Duck Pool Lane (pic 1 & 2). Take care crossing the road at the bottom of the lane (pic 3). Also take under railway bridge on Wellington Road as the path narrows to less that 18in wide (pic 7 & 8).
The route is suitable for wheeled users along most of the route apart from the railway bridge mentioned above. Also, the route up under the Redheugh Bridge is steep and not on a made up path (pic 11). Wheeled user should carry on along to the King Edward bridge and use the path up passed Raven House to join Askew road closer to Gateshead. Head back west to the footbridge for the safest road crossing.
An improved route that brings the best views of the Tyne

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Jun 2024A nice route from Whickham to Gateshead, especially through Cross Lane Meadows nature reserve, along the river and Windmill Hills park. There are some interesting views and sculptures to see.

16 Jun 2024A good route connecting Whickham and Gateshead with limited road walking. Good viewpoints at each end and a lovely stretch along the river. Enjoyed it!.

14 Jun 2024I surveyed and planned this revised route in January. It was great to go out and enjoy it in June with other Slow Ways volunteers and team members. A lovely walk. See my walk description for my notes on this route.
