Description

This desktop-designed route attempts to avoid the access problem with Whebub One. It also avoids using a nearly 2k length of the A163 where there is no pavement and only very narrow verges. The route unavoidably passes through the flood plain of the River Derwent, so it's worth checking on the state of the river before embarking on any route around here, particularly in winter

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

This was an easy, flat, straight forward to navigate route with good signposting. Cars at either end, one at the Lower Derwent Valley NNR car park at Bank Island close to Wheldrake & the other at the car park next to Bubwith bridge. The section from Bubwith to Hagg bridge was a mixture of footpaths through fields with some gravel tracks & the Pocklington canal towpath from east Cottingwith to Hagg Bridge. All the paths were in good condition. There were cows at one point on the canal, but weren't an issue. This section has the only stile on this entire route. This part of the route takes you through the sleepy villages of Bubwith, Aughton, Ellerton & East Cottingwith all containing historic churches. There are also pubs in Bubwith & Ellerton. This section the best part of the route & also good for wildlife with the canal taking you along side Wheldrake Ings, while the fields between Aughton & East Cottingwith contained, Roe Deer, Hares as well as numerous Corn Buntings, several Yellow Wagtail & a Wheatear. There were also several Red Kite. After Hagg Bridge there is section of the walk along a busy 60 mph road, which despite a wide verge is the least enjoyable part of the route. You could always end the walk at Hagg Bridge where a layby is available. This then takes you to into Sutton upon Derwent which has a pub and another historic church. Once of the bridge over the river derwent at Elvington a left turn takes you by the river & also the bizarre sight of a Rhino, Giraffe & elephant statues in a large garden here. On this section from Elvington (where you walk past another church) to Wheldrake there are the only two kissing gates on the entire walk. Another east walk across the fields to Wheldrake where the route finishes at the pub.
I enjoyed the route however would happily miss out the section from Hagg Bridge to Elvington due to having to walk by the side of a busy road. Unfortunately there isn't any alternative footpaths to take at this point.

Walked the route from Bubwith to Wheldrake. This is a flat walk mainly on public footpaths and is relatively easy to follow. There was one style en route and a number of gates to go through as you would expect on a walk on mainly public footpaths and bridleways. There was livestock in one field. The walk does go through a number of lovely East Yorkshire villages (Aughton, Ellerton, East Cottingwith etc) which are very picturesque. There is a section of the route follows the Pocklington Canal which is a haven for wildlife. There is a bit of the walk which is on a main road (Hagg Bridge to Sutton on Derwent). The road does have a very wide verge and the road is very straight for the section that you are on which is good for seeing vehicles but does mean vehicles are going fast. Once to Sutton on Derwent there is a footpath all the way through the village to the River Derwent bridge where the walk goes back to following bridleways and footpaths. There was lots of opportunity to see wildlife and there was some amazing views of the East Yorkshire countryside. The small section next to the road was the reason I only gave it 4 stars. I would definitely walk the first section from Bubwith to Hagg Bridge and the last section from Elvington to Wheldrake again, the section with the road although was reasonably safe wasn't the most fun part of the walk.
