Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Richard Hockin
18 Apr 2024We really enjoyed this route through colliery villages starting in West Rainton and passing through High Pittington, Littletown, Haswell and finishing in South Hetton.
In terms of topography the terrain is gently undulating, starting on the Durham Coal Measures and crossing onto the Magnesian Limestone plateau. There is a great variety of scenery and some superb views on the route, for example from the highest point at High Haswell Farm, and there is much in the way of historical features and wildlife to see.
The route uses public footpaths through settlements, farmland and coniferous forestry, with a short section on pavements in Haswell. Conditions underfoot are generally good, but one or two short sections were muddy when we did the walk, which is not surprising following all the rain in previous months.
The route is mainly well-signposted but we had to use the map occasionally to keep to the rights of way.
There are bus stops with a regular service at the start and finish of the route in West Rainton and South Hetton; there are also convenience stores here, and another close to the route in High Pittington.
