Description
Alternative slightly more direct route between Wells-next-the-Sea and Sheringham which sticks to the Norfolk Coast Path throughout and doesn't take potentially dangerous detours through small towns off-route where at times you have to walk along busy roads with no footpaths

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

28 Mar 2024Walked this route over two days last weekend, breaking it into two legs - Wells-next-the-Sea to Blakeney on day 1, and Blakeney to Sheringham on day 2. We were lucky with the weather which was mainly beautiful spring sunshine, so whilst there was the odd muddy patch, in general the conditions for walking were fairly good, with much of the paths being grassy tracks or earthen paths through and around the marshes - if there had been a lot of rain though some areas might be quite swampy. However - there is one section between Cley-next-the-Sea and Weybourne which is on a stony beach for about 3 miles or so which although flat was pretty tough going, and certainly wouldn't be accessible for anyone using a standard wheelchair or walking with a pram. We were very relieved to finally get back to a clifftop path! The cliffs you walk along the top of especially towards Sheringham are unstable (as noted by many signs) but the path felt far enough away from the edge to seem perfectly safe on the day we went - in high winds or poor visibility it might be different though. This route follows the Norfolk Coast Path and is easy to navigate without a map as there are lots of signs around, and there are small towns you have to go through such as Cley and Blakeney, where you can get some supplies/rest/visit the toilet if needed. We are relatively fit walkers but were very glad we decided to split the route in two, as especially tackling that stony beach stretch towards the end of the second day would be challenging especially if it had come after about 15 miles of walking - so probably only the keenest walkers would attempt the full almost 20 miles in one day. Using the Coasthopper bus service though, it is quite possible to just do short sections of this walk and still see some lovely views.
