Description
This is an alternative to Welmid one which avoids the few miles on the Old Frome Road, which is not pleasant walking - being a well used and fast road. It is, as a result, about a mile longer

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

08 Jun 2023This is a temporary review and I haven't walked the route. We've heard that there is no safe path currently through 9 acre woods due to logging work. We're not sure when it may reopen so please do check before you walk.

24 Oct 2022I walked this route today, from Midsomer Norton to Wells. Most of this route is fabulous. Easy walking across interesting and beautiful countryside, with amazing views from Maesbury Castle.
However, there are significant problems at Cockhill Farm (ST 62930 50394). There is a firmly locked gate, and it isn't entirely clear whether there is actually a right of way through the gate (surely there is, but the issue has been raised with the Somerset Rights of Way team for many years - with the result that there is a "map anomaly"). In addition, if you *do* climb the gate you are in to a world of smelly deep (really, really deep) mud in a small field dense with cows & bulls.
There were a couple of other much more minor access issues (an electric fence across the path for example) - but these were easily circumvented.
I so wanted to be able to give this route 5 stars, but with the above problems, I think I need to flag it for access and try a re-plan that keeps the great features of the original. Welmid three coming soon.

02 Jun 2023I had similar experience in June 2023. As well there is no safe path through 9 acre woods due to logging work. I followed the old frome rd into wells which is a narrow rd between hedgerows, which requires very good visibility for walking as there is no safe exit from the road in many places

19 Mar 2024Anyway you could use Stock Hill and Tape Lane to get to Gurney Slade?

19 Mar 2024I do have an alternative route planned that takes that route. I’ve been waiting to upload it until I’ve walked it, but in fact I’ll do it as soon as I am at home in front of a PC.

19 Mar 2024A little concerning as this is part of the Intercity Core Network. An alternative needs to be found!

19 Mar 2024This route does not go via 9 acre wood, so should be fine.

19 Mar 2024Obviously - I mean from this point of view! My previous comments on the route still stand!
