04 Nov 2022At the Start and Finish kilometres, this follows roads and pavements. The Cole Green Way, in the middle of the route, is a mix of tarmac and gravel sections. Suitable for walkers and average bicycles.

19 Aug 2021Nice flat walk as along an old railway line.Great for bikes too although it can be annoying for walkers constantly having to move aside! By the same token it can be annoying for cyclists having to avoid walkers!.

17 Jun 2021Exit the station over the footbridge. So this is the first obstacle: Photo1
To avoid this obstacle leave the station by the main exit, turn right and walk 100m up to the main road, turn right again following the road bridge (into Bridge Road). Follow into Bridge Road East and on into to Herchswood Road Then turn left to pick up Cycleway Route 61. Photo2
If you’ve gone over the footbridge, turn right at the foot and proceed straight across the first crossing: Photo3
You are on pavements for all this section. At the next crossing, again go across (staggered right) but then within 20m turn left.
This will take you to Herchswood Road. At the next junction the OS map shows the route being straight over (into the industrial estate) Swallowfields. But that route gets tricky (navigationally & rough surfaces). The alternative is to turn right at this mini roundabout following the cycleway (toward Route 61).
If you’ve gone straight over then zig zag through the industrial estate. By either route you should be on the cycle way: Photo 4. The cycleway then becomes Route 61 (& the first mention of Cole Green Way): Photo5
Ignore options to the left, stay on Route 61 across major junctions and on to a tarmacked path: Photo6
You are at last (45mins) out of the urban surrounds: Photo7
Signage for Route 61 or Cole Green can disappear and instead appear as Lee Valley Walks: Photo8
At this point the tarmac runs out and we move onto gravel and some mud patches. Follow it now as obvious rail track all the way to Labby Green: Photo9
Good pub there (Cowper Arms).
Some of the path is now firm earth packed but hence rutted in places (& could have mud patches in wet conditions). Photo10
Over some of the road junctions there are slight restrictions: Photo11. But still wide enough for wheelchair access.
As you approach Hertford you will see or hear the mainline going north south. The Cole Green line seems to run straight ahead but the line is broken so you need to turn off to the right (signs to Hertford). You pass Hertford football ground and come out to a main round. You can turn left to get to Hertford North rail station. Otherwise the route is straight over on a path – but this is straight up a flight of stairs (Photo12). You can void the stairs by also turning left as the path just runs parallel to the road. Either way leads you to the A414.
Turn left to walk out to Hertford North, cross straight over then turn left toward Hertford East.

20 Jun 2021I haven't done the whole route, but thought the Cowper Arms were in Letty Green and not Labby Green.
