Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A walk with some very pretty bits and lovely stops along the way!

We did this walk from Wasdale Head, so the start was the climb to Styhead Tarn. It's very easy to navigate the route, but some care is required as you climb. Depending on your balance, you might need to use your hands in a few places very briefly.

From the tarn, the path is a bit more rocky and can get quite wet if there's a lot of rain, but the descent gives you some pretty views of the fells in Borrowdale. The path does meet the route up/down Scafell Pike, so it could get busy depending on the time of day. There are a lot of rocky steps and paths, so do be careful in wet weather since some of it can be slippery.

The descent brought us into Seathwaite, where we diverted from Waskes one to take the public footpath away from the road. This means we skipped Seatoller as a stop, but thought it was a better option than following the narrow road where cars and buses go by.

The rest of the walk is very pleasant, following rivers, going through woodland, and along Derwentwater. We stopped at YHA Borrowdale for a coffee, which I'd recommend if you need a bit of a rest. After that we joined the Cumbria Way, which meant good path and plenty of places along the river and the lake to sit and enjoy the scenery. There are also a number of eateries and bus stops all along the way if you get hungry or tired and need a bus. If you've got the legs, you might want to consider heading up Cat Bells on the way to Keswick.

Overall, loved this walk, and it's a great way to see the area!.
