06 Aug 2022All the makings of a really good route let down by a dreadfully dangerous road crossing at Halliloo Valley Road, just south of the golf course. Wobbly difficult stiles straight onto a narrow road with plenty of traffic, fast, foot down, accelerating, no verge, no visibility. 100% not safe, guaranteed near miss or death every time.
If this was a ‘one car a minute’ sort of back road it may be ok; but this is a well used back road, and in the short time I was there, crossing and then taking a photo, I would say 5-7 cars passed by in each direction. Eeek!
Also the route at Oxted Downs needs amending for safety to follow the same route as Catoxt Two.
I intend to go back and reccy a safer road crossing point.
Meanwhile if anyone wants to walk this route I highly recommend it, apart from make the changes at Oxted Downs by looking at how Catoxt Two does it; and work out an alternative way of getting from Warlingham across the golf course and up to Long Hill without getting killed crossing the road. There are a few possibilities.
Photo of the south stile showing how there is a steep drop to road and nowhere safe to stand once off the stile; the greenery obscures visual info, reliant on sound. The other side where I took the photo after crossing is even worse. Drivers are accelerating on a straight road, have no idea there are paths crossing, and pass very close to the sides.

11 Aug 2022The Oxted Downs section seems to be the same as Catoxt one. The alternative in Catoxt two uses the North Downs Way on better paths.
