Connect Warlingham with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Warlingham to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Warlingham’s Slow Ways.

Lovely walk some steep hills in, and out, of valleys....
Strider
I walked from Warlingham to Oxted on a day forecast for overcast rain, it was therefore a bright crisp Autumn day. The walk into Oxted is muddy (in winter) but nice. Not for wheels, however, steep, very narrow, muddy, and obstacles....

From Croydon Road is Tillingdown Hill which is quite steep and leads onto a permissive footpath at the top. The route ends down Mount Pleasant Road into the centre of Caterham where there are cafes, supermarkets, buses and trains to Croydon....

The alternative (same distance) would be to continue along the LOOP to Tithepit Shaw Lane then turn right to join the path opposite Court Farm entrance....

Walk this routeTwo busy roads to cross (B269 Titsey Road and A25 Westerham Road) but I found there were good sight lines and frequent lulls in the traffic. Toilets at Leas Road, Warlingham and Fullers Hill, Westerham....

Apart from the road at Selsdon almost all on quiet lanes/footpaths, well plotted. Steep downhill from Selsdon, uphill from Warlingham - but good pavements all the way....

Walk this routeGood route, direct, well plotted, almost entirely off road....

After going along some streets (photo #1) and roads (photo #2) in Warlingham, the route almost exclusively goes through woodlands (photo #3, #4, #5, #6), first up towards Farleigh with its church (photo #7), and then continuing through a golf course (which you can hardly see) (photo #8, #9, #10)....

From Kenley the path goes fairly up (photo #1) towards Honister Heights. At the east end of Honister Heights the path follows a bridleway (photo #3, #4) towards the Sanderstead to Whyteleafe Country Side Area....

I persevered close to the hedge line and the path did reappear, but tucked around the corner just out of sight. Soon the path came to the 'Sanderstead to Whyteleafe Countryside Area', jointly managed for wildlife by two councils across the London Surrey border. The lane came out to a short, very quiet section residential section then out onto another meadow at Riddlesdown, which is chalk downland with yew woods on the steep slopes. You cannot physically follow the route line through fences, but there's a path or two nearby heading in the same direction....

Signage in golf course almost feels deliberately unhelpful, as does the fact they planted trees along and across the line of the right of way....

Crossing the road: I spent a lot of time sorting out the crossing at Halliloo Valley road (2 visits), and trying out different golf course routings; this is possibly the most dangerous road I’ve encountered while reviewing Slow Ways routes - so yes, the route looks a bit weird, but it is as safe as I could make it. It is a little disconcerting that the public footpath signposts across the golf course are sporadic and don’t form a joined up set - it does involve crossing fairways where the path is not obvious, but the route is drawn pretty accurately....
Jane Taylor
All the makings of a really good route let down by a dreadfully dangerous road crossing at Halliloo Valley Road, just south of the golf course. If this was a ‘one car a minute’ sort of back road it may be ok; but this is a well used back road, and in the short time I was there, crossing and then taking a photo, I would say 5-7 cars passed by in each direction....
Jane Taylor
The route is soon in pleasant countryside but it's easy to miss the narrow path (left) just after the equestrian centre. Old Farleigh Road has fairly busy traffic and is quite a steep hill. Good Sainsbury's at Selsdon with Toilets....
JohnMyerson
Begins with a stretch of road that can't really be avoided, but afterwards a pleasant walk....

This is a lovely walk, I’d recommend having maps open as up on Riddlesdown is quite expansive, and once passing Warlingham school you don’t feel you’re on much of a public path! Only one for the light, the end bit approaching Warlingham is often muddy too....

The majority of the route takes place on the uplands or the North Downs, with a brief dip into a valley at the end just before arriving in New Addington. The first part of the route zigzags through residential paved roads and a small track between riding stables, before peeling off onto the Green Lane track for approx 800m, a quiet, straight path backing onto gardens but with plenty of hedgerows and a commanding view of the grazing land in between Warlingham and Chelsham. Much of the route through the golf course is either lined with fences or small trees and thick hedgerows, providing a safe haven for wildlife and a shield from flying golf balls! Glimpse across the golf course will reveal the valley below and the apartment blocks on the other side, which indicates the remainder of the route towards New Addington After about 150m horizontal (40-45m vertical), before weaving through residential streets and an estate towards New Addington Tram Station, the end of the route, with public transport access to West Croydon...
