Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Good route, direct, well plotted, almost entirely off road.

16 Jul 2023 Summer

I walked this on a showery and stormy morning, from Warlingham to New Addington.

After going along some streets (photo #1) and roads (photo #2) in Warlingham, the route almost exclusively goes through woodlands (photo #3, #4, #5, #6), first up towards Farleigh with its church (photo #7), and then continuing through a golf course (which you can hardly see) (photo #8, #9, #10). It is mostly sloped down hill, until you cross Featherbed Lane (easy), where the path then goes up steeply towards North Downs Road. From there on it is a short section towards New Addington (photo #11) and its tram stop (photo #12). A good route, but not too varied.

N.B. THIS IS A REUPLOAD; I HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED A REVIEW WHICH HAS DISAPPEARED.

Warnew (Warlingham - New Addington)
Distance: 5.35km
Time taken: 1 hour 5 minutes
******
Comments: As a starting point, Warlingham is a good option; there are plenty of eateries, supermarkets, convenience stores and a pub surrounding an obvious and prominent triangular green, with a war memorial in the centre, where the Warlingham reference point is located. The majority of the route takes place on the uplands or the North Downs, with a brief dip into a valley at the end just before arriving in New Addington.
******
The first part of the route zigzags through residential paved roads and a small track between riding stables, before peeling off onto the Green Lane track for approx 800m, a quiet, straight path backing onto gardens but with plenty of hedgerows and a commanding view of the grazing land in between Warlingham and Chelsham. A short meander through the small but picturesque Littlepark and Greatpark Woods, briefly linking up with the Vanguard Way Recreational Route/Bridleway, leads you towards a riding stable and onto Farleigh Court Golf Course. Just before this, there is a small parish next to the stables (St Mary the Virgin Church, (TQ 37232 60078)) with a small cemetery with benches to sit on should a quick break be required.
******
Much of the route through the golf course is either lined with fences or small trees and thick hedgerows, providing a safe haven for wildlife and a shield from flying golf balls! Glimpse across the golf course will reveal the valley below and the apartment blocks on the other side, which indicates the remainder of the route towards New Addington. Entering Frith Wood (watch out for the beautiful carpet of bluebells in spring time), you will start to descend into the valley at a gentle gradient, crossing Featherbed Lane at the bottom (the crossing is a safe one, with an obvious crossing point and good visibility in both directions), before a short, steep climb up the other side of the valley with gravel and concrete underfoot. There is a series of steel chicane barriers up here, presumably to stop cyclists from hurtling downhill, but there is a big enough gap that they should be accessible to disabled users without any difficulty. After about 150m horizontal (40-45m vertical), before weaving through residential streets and an estate towards New Addington Tram Station, the end of the route, with public transport access to West Croydon.
******
Overall, this is a useful, functional and scenic route between two residential areas in the Surrey Hills. It is direct, avoids roads except where necessary and safe, goes through attractive woodland, footpaths and pastoral land and offers excellent access to disabled users and equestrian participants (dog walkers should keep their dogs under control as the area is used by a lot of horse riders). Would happily verify and recommend!
