Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

The route runs northwards, starting at the market square in Wantage, away from the town centre, and then through the adjacent town of Grove (home for the Williams Formula One racing team). Consequently, it doesn't feel that rural for the first 3km or so. But after that, it's much more so. The village of West Hanney provides the only break until you get to the outskirts of Kingston Bagpuize, which also features the photogenic and visitable Kingston Bagpuize House, about 1km from the end of the route.
The route itself is predominantly flat, running across the flood plain of the river Ock. It also has a much higher percentage of paved surface than you might expect, in part because significant parts are on-road. Unfortunately, several small elements make it too much of a challenge for anything with wheels - patches which were very muddy, and a gate at Swannybrook Farm that might be locked - walkers can go around it but I doubt anything wheeled would make it.
I mentioned that significant parts are on-road. This refers to the section north of West Hanney. I did explore the possibility of using the footpath that runs to Lyford (which you can see on the OS map), to reduce the amount of road, but north of Lyford the path is prone to high levels of flooding, and there aren't other suitable paths I've been able to identify.
Both Wantage and Kingston Bagpuize have good bus services, which helps if you're doing this as a one-way trip.
And finally, I deduce that the local thatcher has a signature that involves birds - see pictures for details.
