20 Aug 2023This first section of this route heads onto on a smooth wide track, the “Roe Green Loopline” through woodland. You continue on this until you get just before the M60 bridge which goes over the path. Here, head off to the right up some steps then turn left over the bridge to follow the footpath running parallel to the motorway. After crossing the motorway, the route thankfully heads away from the noise passing through more woodland and fields before arriving at the outskirts of Swinton where you cross a pedestrian bridge over the A580. You then walk through more residential streets, through Moorside park before heading to the centre of town for the finish. A pleasant and straightforward walk.

20 Aug 2023The route from Walkden started with a lovely, clean, wooded section of tarmacked cycle-track which took us 40% of the way. The exit was on the right, just before the motorway bridge, although I was expecting it to be on the left. There were steps at both ends of this section, and a cycle barrier.
We then crossed some woods and fields on easy, well-used footpaths, before coming out to a footbridge over the busy A580. This was one those annoying bridges with shallow sloping steps at both ends. I always wonder who they are designed to help. Any steps make it difficult for all wheels and they’re often a difficult distance apart for prams/buggies, and they are a long way round for walkers, and they slope too so are harder work! A compromise that helps no-one! Okay, moan over.
A few residential streets (with much pavement parking) brought us to an alleyway that led into some playing fields. Soon after this we arrived at the shopping centre of Swinton. The public toilets there were blocked off, but Asda provided useful facilities. There were the odd nice old buildings here, but mostly it was faded but functional.
Overall this largely urban route crossing two very major roads, was safe and had a surprising amount of green space.
