Review of SlowWays Route Uddham two one (Uddingston to Hamilton)
This is a fairly long but varied route with glimpses of several interesting buildings and other attractions along the way. The route starts in the centre of Uddingston but actually at first heads away from the main direction of travel to join a footpath on the other side of the railway station which leads down to the riverside. The next part of the route is along tarmacked or compacted earth footpaths (sometimes quite narrow) with good views down to the river and up to Bothwell Castle. When the start of the footbridge over to Blantyre is reached the route turns inland and makes its way through Bothwell, following pavements and requiring a few road crossings. The next major landmark to be reached (and crossed) is the Bothwell Bridge. Beyond this there is a long, relatively uninteresting pavement section until the route enters Bothwell Road Park (with its impressive War Memorial). After this brief stretch through green space the route heads uphill through a retail park and follows pavements to its end at Hamilton West Station. All in all a good route. The riverside sections can feel a little isolated and may become muddy in places after rain. The pavement sections are a little dull. However the various historic and modern builings passed along the way maintain the traveller’s interest.

There is another route - Uddham one which starts and finishes at the same locations, it is longer by nearly two miles however is more rural in the southern stretches.
The Uddham routes starts at the Green opposite the Tunnock’s Bakery in Uddingston. Crossing the junction to Bellshill Road and along Old Glasgow Road then under the railway line will take you to Kylepark Drive. Annes Pantry shop will lead you to National Cycle Route 75. There is a Information board showing the local Clyde Walkway.
Follow the route as runs along in the back of the houses. You will cross under the railway with both bridges, old and current easily seen. Follow the track through the woods. There are some good views across the River Clyde before you get to Bothwell Castle which is undergoing extensive restoration and is closed to visitors (Sept 2022). This part of Uddham Two is the same as the Uddham One route.
Keep to the upper path until you exit the woods and make your way to rejoin the main road B7071. Continue south along the road past the Covenanters Monument and over the Clyde at Bothwell Bridge. Continue on the B7071 past the Hamilton Race Course until you reach Bothwell Road Park. Turn into the park and head for the bandstand. There are paths if the grass is wet. Keep heading for the School on the west side of the park. Turn to the south and head towards a large Retail Park. Once past the supermarkets and coffee shops, you will turn westwards and the end of the route at Hamilton West Railway Station which has good access for all forms of transport.
