Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

19 Dec 2022A great route, well served by public transport.
Finished at the seaside which is well served by amenities such a public toilets a small shop, ice cream and good pubs.
I would recommend Totpai two which is a slightly more direct route.

16 Dec 2022This is an excellent route that's full of delicious paths and old unmetalled lanes. I caught the train to Totnes and walked to Paington to pick up the train home again.
Helen's comments are spot on.
Care is needed south of Coombe House Lane on Aish Road/Lembury Road where the lane. The lane is mostly straight, but it's very narrow - especially when wider vehicles need to pass. Using Coombe House Lane is preferable I think, so I'm going to share another route version that deals with this and takes out some steps.
I highly recommend this route. I'm wanting to come back and walk this route again in the summer.

15 Dec 2022 (edited 16 Dec 2022)This is a great route. I walked it on 12/12 in a very cold spell so there was a fair bit of ice & frost, but not muddy!
Totnes and Paignton couldn’t be more different really - historic town with an alternative lifestyle vibe to English Riviera seaside resort. The route has different characters too.
It is fairly accessible - no stiles, there are some steps but with alternative options. Some steep gradients and lanes which could be muddy at times so it depends on level of mobility. Whilst much of it would be suitable for off-road wheels, not all of it would be.
The route initially follows pavement out of Totnes then goes onto a beautiful old lane -Fleet Mill Lane, an unmetalled road - as far as Aish. A really lovely holloway with a great sense of history.
From Aish the route follows quiet lanes for the most part with one cross-field footpath.
Coming into the fringe of Paignton is a bit jarring on the senses - suddenly passing industrial estate, housing development & a superstore. Getting to the footbridge across the main road was a bit of a puzzle at first - walk along pavement to the entrance of Sainsbury’s then through carpark. You can cross the main road at the traffic lights but the bridge brings you out at the right place easily.
The next section was a nice surprise after that hustle and bustle - through a public park, following well worn informal paths, then through a nature reserve.
After making your way across the leisure centre car park, you reach the seafront which the route follows up along the cliff top to the old harbour, then into town past arcades to the station. The seafront was a bit bleak on a cold December day but still beautiful, and plenty of refreshment options.
Both Totnes and Paignton served by regular train and bus services.
A great walk, really enjoyable.

16 Dec 2022Loved walked this route. Thanks for this review Helen! I've made a tweak to the route to improve on a short section of lane walking and added the new version here https://beta.slowways.org/Route/Totpai/10210 I still think it's a Five Star route though!
