21 Dec 2024I walked this route from Bircotes. It is a functional route that adequately joins two hubs but is is not a scenic delight ! From the Bircotes hub there is a long pavement walk down Scrooby Rd, and after crossing the busy Blyth Rd (at a pedestrian crossing, continues along main street Harworth. It branches off past housing on Common Lane before it follows the unsurfaced track under the A1 and then sharply turns alongside the A1. This section is dominated by the noise of traffic. After passing High Hazel farm the route follows crossfield footpaths. It is easy to follow but (following rain mid-week) it is muddy. Eventually we approach Tickhill through farm buildings to emerge on Castle Gate and then a straight forward walk along Castle Gate to reach the hub. Tickhill has numerous refreshment points but Bircotes and Harworth had none that were open. The farmland bit is pleasant to walk but the rest a functional route - a means to an end !.

10 Apr 2024 (edited 11 Apr 2024)Walked from Bircotes/Harworth to Tickhill. An easy and direct route, the only difficulties being some slightly muddy field paths and one stile. Having started a three route day in Worksop, it was raining by the time I did this route, but fortunately the phone wasn't needed much for navigation.
The route is simple. From Bircotes, we follow pavements to the edge of Harworth, then continue under the A1 on Common Lane. Once we pass the farm and continue into Yorkshire we are on fairly well used field paths. The castle mound dominates the view as we cross the fields into Tickhill, but the castle grounds are private (apparently open just one day a year) so there is no good close up viewpoint, though we do pass a well fortifled castle gate near the mill pond. The meeting point in Tickhill is in the Market Place.
